network Ideas and Advice

New Around Here
Hi,

I would like to create a New home network. My plan is to use a Dell Poweredge 2950 Server computer. A few things I would like to do would be create a daily/nightly backup routine for all the computers on the network, about 10. I also plan to create a VPN connection to another home, media server and possibly a smart home server. Among other things...

I planned to use a Ubiquuity Edge Pro Router to connect to my ISP and to VPN connect to the other location. (Which would likely also use the same router).

My questions; the edgerouter pro a good choice? Should I use the server computer as the router instead, with pfsense possibly? Would that be a more effective VPN server? I have been reading a lot and been getting a little confused. I am still a noob.* From what I have read it would be beneficial to create an active directory and use the server as the DHCP server. Any and all advice is appreciated. On a side note I prefer to mount all this in a small server rack, as able

I'd get a small NAS instead of a rather fat and power hungry server.

Yea I have considered that and it is likely simpler, etc. Except for the part that I want to learn and tweak...I think.
