New Around Here
Here is my tentative setup, I already have an at&t modem/wireless router combo, with two video game systems hardwired (was hoping to get nat 3/open nat but not important), then there are anywhere from 1 to 3 laptops usually no more than 2, then desktop wireless. There is a mix of Windows 7, & Ubuntu, most pc's are dual-core. Then there are 4 cell phones.

I want to set things up using the desktop as a server (although the modem has to be in a different room unfortunately don't know if that matters). The desktop is running a version of Ubuntu (Zorin 9 lite), I will be setting it up as a cheap htpc at the moment it's only streaming Netflix, but I'll add to it as I can. I want to be able to use it as a backup device for the other pic's, & I want to be able to control it from the cell phones, if that's not possible I'll get a universal IR remote.

I'm not looking for something fancy and definitely not expensive. Just a basic system that connect all the devices, allowing for the transfer of data between everything, and remote control of the desktop. On top of all that in the near future, I will be upgrading my Dish Network to a network capable dvr. I thought about adding a Chromecast, then realized I didn't need that using a pc for a htpc.

So does anyone have any suggestions that would help me with this. Network software, ssh (tunneling), or some other way of achieving something close to what I want, I don't think I'll get everything I want, so I just want to get as close as possible.
