Lets say you have an unlimited bandwidth feed at 20 meg down, 1 meg up.

run the feed into a 4 port switch.....what does each port then have as
bandwidth and speed.....

I assume that bandwidth is still unlimited so all ports have unlimited access, what happens to speed at each port?

Thanks

Each port will get up to 20mbps. But then the 20mbps will be shared by other lan devices.

If PC on port one is using 5mbps, then PC on port two will have 15mbps to use.

This is if you are only downloading from wan.

.

Lan side only. If its a gigabit switch. Then gigabit will be shared by 4 devices. Each device will get up to a gig on each port one at a time. But speed goes down when several devices are using lan network simultaneously.

And you cant say unlimited, as unlimited it self has no limitations that can't be measured. Unlimited will stay unlimited even on 10 port switch. Might as well say you have a switch with infinite ports.
Put a number on it.

for intra lan traffic, all ports are perfectly capable of achieving their max throughput simultaneously. ie, traffic between ports 1 & 2 will not affect traffic between ports 3 & 4. switching is unaffected by the cpu as the switch is essentially creating independent circuits between ports and the cpu is essentially just attached to another internal port. the switch or 'switchport' of the router connects to the cpu via the 'et' interface to allow the cpu to act as a host itself on the network as well as control vlan functionality, etc. an example, i've seen a bricked router's switchport continue to function and allow lan traffic to pass between hosts.
