Can I install Merlin without doing any type of backups first. I think the router installed newer Asus firmware already
thanks

It's not mandatory but it's always wise to take a backup before doing any kind of system update. It only takes a moment and the file created is less 100kB.

EDIT: Or are you talking about backing up the firmware itself? In which case just download the latest version from the Asus website so you have a local copy if for some reason you lose internet connectivity after installing the new firmware.

Any advantage using GNUton over stock Asus ..and can you go back to stock if needed?
GNUton is a fork of Merlin so see if there's any Merlin features that you want that are not in stock firmware: https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/features

You can go back to stock firmware at any time. Just remember to do a factory reset and manual configuration (or restore from a corresponding backup file) when switching between different firmware branches.
