New user: unable to get local DNS resolution to work.

New Around Here
Hi,
I'm a first time user to asus-merlin. I am very happy I found it! Nice job!

I have read the dnsmasq man, and searched on this forum and Google, tried numerous iterations of dnsmasq.conf.add, writing my own dnsmasq.conf; I have essentially exhausted my ability to get local DNS working.

If I put in anything into "RT-N16's Domain Name", DNS does not resolve either local or external names. If the "RT-N16's Domain Name" is blank, I resolve external names, but not internal.

Is there a dnsmasq on asus-merlin for dummies somewhere? Google is not getting the job done; search on the forum is not yielding the results I need to get this working.

Thanks in advance!

Make sure your clients are set to DHCP rather than static. Otherwise, their own local domain won't be the same as the one used by the router and its DHCP-assigned clients.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply!
I have all my machines set to DHCP, and I have reserved/static IPs for them.

When I SSH into the router, the nslookup does not resolve local names either.

Not trying to be insulting....but have you forced a DHCP request from the local machines (either issue a renew or replug the cable)? In my experience, wireless clients will generally do a renew on their own, but wired needs a shove.

Sorry, this is not a dummy device. No insult meant...
Before you started to add rules to dnsmasq did your router resolve dns correctly?

Hi,
I have reset DHCP clients several times with release/renew...; no joy.

I have not had any issue with external name resolution/DNS until I added the domain name "net.home"... Then DNS for external names stopped working, and still no local DNS resolution. nslookup shows net.home appending to all queries.... so no name resolution, local or external.

When I delete "net.home", then name resolution/DNS works again.

I tried something new; I changed the Domain Name to "home.local". I get no local resolution, and external name resolution works fine.

From what I read, this should just work....

In all of this, nslookup behaves the same on the RT16N and on my Win 7 machines.

I am by no means a networking expert, but I can not see why this is not working.

BTW, there was an application to ICANN for the .home TLD, so anyone using this for their LAN network might want to change to a different one.

These new TLDs are going to break so many things left and right...

Hi,
I have also done the ipconfig /flushcache

I forgot to mention that looked through the logs as well. There nothing that jumped out at me...

i have cleared out everything, gone back to plain files, no *.add files now... still no local resolution.

BTW, I also followed the thread on turning off VPN server off. I have also tried others like home.local, home.internal, home.mynet, etc...; all with the same result, no local look up.

C:\>nslookup google.com
1.114.168.192.in-addr.arpa
primary name server = localhost
responsible mail addr = nobody.invalid
serial = 1
refresh = 600 (10 mins)
retry = 1200 (20 mins)
expire = 604800 (7 days)
default TTL = 10800 (3 hours)
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.114.1

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: google.com.home.mynet
Address: 67.215.65.132

See how it appends the home.mynet to google.com? Very odd.

C:\>nslookup y580

Here is my windows setup:

I am truly stumped...

I am truly stumped...
Start from scratch, perhaps?
Anyway, can you post the output of ipconfig from your Winbox?
Also, a screenshot of LAN /DHCP Server would maybe help.

Hi,
I think I am going to take a new direction... I picked up a raspberry pi a while back...

I'm going to install and configure dnsmasq on it to see if I can get that to work... If I can get that to work, I'll see if I can replicate my success onto the rtn16.

Thanks all for your replies.

Have you enabled "Forward local domain queries to upstream DNS" in LAN -> DHCP Server ?

I think this should be disabled.
