Asus AC87U has a link where you can try ASUSWRT.

On the VPN tab you can select "VPN Server" or "VPN Client".

What's the difference?

Why does ASUSWRT for the RTAC68U only have the server option?

A server is something you connect to. A client is used to connect to something else.

The router's VPN server lets you connect to your home network while you are not at home.

The router's VPN client lets you connect your router to someone else's network (for example, a VPN tunnel provider).

The AC68U has both server and client, these were added only a few months ago, so older firmwares might not have it yet.
