Nslookup of local ws returns opendns

If I enable OpenDNS in Parental Controls, then nslookup for a workstation on the local subnet returns opendns address, instead of the local one.

This is a known limitation of DNSFilter. Nothing that can be done about it.

If I DO NOT enable any Parental Controls/DNS Filtering, then how to setup/use opendns.com?

When I enable DNS Filtering, I can not print to my HP 4MV LaserJet printer with JetDirect card.

I created the printer (when I had the WL-5420GU) with a "Standard TCP/IP Port" with...
Port Name: hp4mv.myhse.lan
Port Number: 9100

I also configured the JetDirect card with...
IP Addy: 192.168.1.204
Mask: 255.255.255.0
GW: 192.168.1.1
DHCP Srvr: 192.168.1.1

I have an Opendns Home account with about 12 filter categories I want to use.

My old WL-520GU/Tomato has this ability.

Sign up for OpenDNS, then you can setup content filtering on their website. This way you can have even more flexibility, you can specify custom categories to block. You'll have to configure OpenDNS as your dns server in router's settings (or on each LAN client you want filtered), and you'll have to configure auto-updating OpenDNS with your IP address, either by using their client utility, or by using DDNS in the router/WAN.

The drawback, compared to parental control in router, is that you can't specify different level of filtering for different workstations on your LAN.

Regarding printer, all you have to do is specify port name as IP address instead of hp4mv.myhse.lan

On LAN/DHCP server we specify RT-N66U's Domain Name. Can't you except this domain name from DNSFilter?

The way DNSFilter works, it forwards every single DNS request from the specified client to the specified remote DNS server. There is no local processing done by the router. This is how the router is able to force you through that specific DNS.

Not sure about Parental Controls.

However, from your OpenDNS account dashboard, go under advanced settings and define VPN exceptions. This may not seem intuitive, but it works.

I added my company VPN domain and ".lan".

I would have to login to my account for the exact path to the settings.

I also recall something about typo auto correction...

Hope this helps you!

As a newbie using the Merlin build, I just discovered that changing WAN => WAN DNS Setting => Connect to DNS Server automatically to No displays two "DNS Server" fields... DUH! :o
Yes, filter the entire houshold (me & wife).

I have also changed all the OpenDNS messages under Customization to verify that I am using MY OpenDNS settings, for example, under Block Page...
Sorry, [DOMAIN] was prevented from loading because of a web content filtering catagory. Mike :-)

Using hp4mv.myhse.lan has worked on my retired WL-520GU and does work on the new RT-N16 if I DO NOT enable DNS Filtering.

Just curious. Is it working as you hoped with WAN/WAN DNS Setting set to OpenDNS and Parental Control off?

A very definite YES. :D:D

I ONLY changed the WAN DNS Server settings.

My HP printer works like it did before on the WL-520GU.

When I ping devices on my home network, I get the 192.168.1.x address, not the OpenDNS IP.

Since I tweaked my OpenDNS Customizations, I see my name when I try to go to "bad" sites. (I am guessing OpenDNS compares my current IP address with the one in my OpenDNS account.)
