nvram variables lost on reboot

Hey Guys, finally decided to stop lurking and actually post!

So I flashed the latest merlin build yesterday and am trying to get vlan tagging enabled on port 4 of my RT-N66U, my initial steps were to set the related nvram variables and try rebooting:

nvram set vlan3ports='4t 8'
nvram set vlan3hwname='et0'
nvram commit
reboot

However, when I reboot and use nvram show, I can't see my variables for vlan3. Is there any script that overrides everything at boot?
