Open VPN per client configuration router help

Hello,

I need help in selecting the router where i would like to configure openvpn which can be connected per client device. for example if i have 5 devices in my home, i would like to connect only 3 to open vpn ( so that i can have different ip to those clients) and remaining 2 should connect to normal router.
will this setup be possible and if so, which router should i be purchasing for this

This setup is possible on stock Asuswrt with available VPN Fusion from version 388. This means on almost everything from RT-AX58U and better. Expected VPN speed is another question. ARMv8 CPU routers like RT-AX86U Pro or better can do about 200Mbps, ARMv7 CPU routers like RT-AX58U and related models can do about 100Mbps.

Thanks for the response. will this work with ASUS RT-BE92U. Will this have kill switch for openvpn ?

It will work on RT-BE92U, but there is no kill switch in stock Asuswrt and this model has no Asuswrt-Merlin support.

can you please let me know which models ( wifi 6 or highend) has Asuswrt-Merlin support so that i can purchase
and can i use open vpn per client devices ?

PS: I want to use openvpn client on the router not server

Information about Asuswrt-Merlin supported models is here:

If buying a new router today my suggestion is RT-AX86U Pro or better.
Thanks. i will purchase RT-AX86U Pro
just one last question. with RT-AX86U Pro, i can have open vpn client installed and then i can give the openvpn client per client right ?

this means only 1 device can be pointed to open vpn configuration and all other connections will be pointed to normal router ip.
I need to update the router with Asuswrt-Merlin firmware right ?

just one last question.

You asked the same question above. And if this one device can run VPN by itself - you don't need a new router at all.

Yes both the Asus firmware and the Asus-Merlin include an OpenVPN Server. On certain routers, like the RT-AX86U Pro, both firmware's also have Wireguard Server support.

PS: Both also have OpenVPN and Wireguard client support as well that can be configured on a per local network client basis; VPN Fusion on stock Asus firmware and VPN Director on Asus-Merlin firmware.

actually i need 3 devices to connect to openvpn

RT-AX86U Pro will do selective routing in stock Asuswrt (VPN Fusion), if you want kill switch on top you have to use Asuswrt-Merlin (VPN Director). To devices using VPN the connection speed will be limited, latency will be higher and in case you plan using known public VPN service you may discover other inconveniences later. You also have to abandon available Pro features in stock Asuswrt 3006 firmware since Asuswrt-Merlin is currently 3004 based firmware. Good luck!
