Is there an easy way to set up a username/password authentication system for OpenVPN?

I run the latest version from the Merlin firmware on an AC66U router, OpenVPN is running and working. I tested from an other network with an Windows OpenvPN client and I can set up an OpenVPN connection with only the correct certificates, I would like to have a username/password for extra security.

Is there a simple way to achieve this?

Simple way, no. You will have to dig through the OpenVPN documentation, and manually create the required config entries.

But in all honesty, a username/password will add little security. Look at your certificate pair as if it was a 1024 characters long password, if you will. As long you ensure that the private keys and signing certs are in a secure location, you are safe.
