Yeah, I don't use the geographically closest, just the fastest ... you can tell the speed on the chart. For me Toronto or US East work best.

My base speed to my isp is 56mbits and I often hit 53mbs to New York.

Not quite full saturation of my connection, but given the overhead of the VPN I thought it was great. On my N66u, using my networkmanager (Arch Linux) to set up the openvpn I get full saturation, mind you I have a very fast rig, intel nic etc ....

I am impressed with your R7000... AC56U with stock clocks (and AC68 is pretty much the same) will never be able to achieve such VPN speeds - assuming that the VPN client runs on the router..

I need to resolve a couple of problems with my ISP (so I can get the speed I am paying for), and I have an open ticket with PIA - I should be getting close to your speeds with VPN running on a PC.

An overclocked AC56/AC68 running my firmware might beat an R7000, as I optimize openvpn and openssl for performance (I checked the Netgear code and they don't).

Unless the faster RAM they use can compensate, but from my tests the bottleneck seemed more at the CPU level than the RAM level.

Pia Fastest servers are us East absolutely Toronto... Those servers have 160+ servers and 10x the bandwidth of most servers!

Just to be clear, I got that speed on the R7000 using DDWRT, there is no openvpn client in the netgear firmware (at least that I was able to find) only an Openvpn server.

Merlin - you optimizations seems to yield better VPN speeds than PC Client :)
However, we need to compare apples to apples. While overclocked AC56 can compete with stock clocked R7000, R7K can be OC-ed as well...yet at stock clocks Netgear beats AC56/AC68 pretty badly.

I'm stopping now and waiting until i resolve my current speed issues; hopefully i will be able to get back soon with updated results

That's unlikely :) The optimization I added were ASM-optimization for OpenSSL (the old version Asus uses didn't have the latest ASM code), and I'm compiling related components with the highest compiler optimizations, while by default Asus/DD-WRT/Netgear use more conservative optimizations to reduce filesize.

A regular PC's CPU muscle is more than enough to compensate even for more loosely optimized code.

With the ac68u what speed should I be getting.... Not oced on memory or cpu. What is the highest that has been achieved sofar?

It is difficult to come up with an absolute number.

To minimize variables you need to use an Ethernet connection between your PC and the router. First run a VPN client on your PC and connect to a VPN server and run a speed test to a speed test server in the same city.

Then start the VPN on your router and repeat the same test.

IMHO you will be doing very well to get 60 - 70% of your throughput using just a high powered SOHO router. With an obsolete and under powered router such as a 54G the best I can get is 25 - 30%.

I can get 90 - 95% (70 Mbps ) using an ASUS N66 with optimized Sabai firmware, VPN accelerator and the best VPN provider I could find after test four providers. Without the accelerator my downloads topped out at 40 - 50 Mbps. Even less throughput using a VPN provider without big enough pipes to the Internet.

I'm using pia... Who are the top 4? Do they make vpn accelerator for the ac68u?

Wow 20 mbps, 48mbps... Sheesh I wish.

I just signed up for 1 month with Hide your butt, set up OpenVpn client and tested about 10 different servers. Results?

Best I can do with my N66U router (Merlin 39-em FW) is about 10 Mbps on my 80/8 Mbps connection. Soon as I disconnect I get 77/7.5 Mbps results.

I'll test a bit longer and if results don't improve try another provider. Last resort I go back to Unblock-Us

BTW: PC client didnt give me any better results
