Packet tracer simulator - is it a gimmick?

You all know the Main player who promotes this PC gui/designer app together with an "Academy" for online courses leading to accreditation and "certificates" and (compulsory) self improvement throughout your career yada yada. Selling the sizzle promises a Walmart shelf filler the prospect of a $100,000 compensation (no entry quals or high school diploma needed). I m sure you get the picture. This is not to deprecate the value of the cable guy btw - someone has to do it.
So I was tempted to use up some time to see if this was a worthwhile avenue of enlightenment. I quickly concluded that this seemed like a sales promotion toy for YKW as most of the modules used proprietary equipment pt nos and mostly for industrial kit. However the original pitch was "Networks for dummies" etc and a few home network examples (seemed like clickbait?). Interestingly there were many items offered under the cat IoT devices, thermostats, lamps, etc. Then a glaring dismissal of security networks, IP cameras etc as being of trivial concern (their words btw). Hmm clearly Im not on msg.

I was also hoping that this design tool would help to document an IP network systematically ie produce standardises "boiler plates" for end devices and connections so that all the security names, addresses and passwords and other important data would be recorded in order. Hope I am making sense (I am not from an IT bg but spent my career in systems engineering/design within the petrochem industries so I apply apply the kind of mind rigour that doesnt accept system "drop outs". We cant for example be filling a Storage Tank on a tank farm and lose comms only to find the tank is overflowing on to the ground with highly flammable liquid - see my point? We have SCADA systems (supervisory control and data acquisition) and could certainly make profitable use for digital data acquisition where the condition of the vessel, its contents and flowlevel are monitored and evaluated routinely. Its called the IIoT Industrial Internet of Things.

So my OP seems to concluded that this route to IT professionalism is highly brand related and may well be largely outmoded OSI vs TC/IP model.

Whats your take on this?
