New Around Here
Hello to everybody, especially to Tim!!!
Thanks a lot for such a useful resource!!!

i'm interested in buying a new NAS, so this qnap model seems promising.
I have already read the "New To The Charts: QNAP TS-419P+" but still got questions to experienced members.
I read a lot for now about new NAS models based on atom dual-core cpus, and that even a single-core atom cpu has an advantage over marvell. And that also its more futureproff, considering those qpackages, that can be added to the nas later, because of its x386 ark.
Is it really so, in the case of 419P+, and should i look for a single- or dual- core cpu if my needs are these:
1. make backups from 3-4 pcs to the NAS
2. make backup from the NAS to external storage
3. stream by DLNa an HD content to a tv
4. access to NAS by smb with popcornhour to play hd content
5. download and seed torrents 24/7
6. In the future may be i'll use the surveillance station of the qnap.

Of course these tasks are not going to run at the same time, but may often overlap.

Is 419P+ capable of all that (at the end its positioned as a new model for home/soho) or its cpu is past age and should not be considered?
Or is it tuned for such tasks, and even without multitasking can handle those?

Dual-core nases from qnap are way pricier, as are readynas 4 ultras. The synology 411+ is also more expensive, and i dont like their approach to camera licences.

P.S. I understand that DIY is better, but got no time to dig in, although have experiense.

The surveillance software on the QNAPs is terrible, so don't count on using it. Its buggy and requires ActiveX, so it only works on windows PCs with IE.

Everything else on the 419 I have works very well. You have to install additional packages to get Twonky (DNLA server) to work, but its not hard.
I stream media to a few PS3s from this, at the same time. It hardly uses any CPU up. It can not transcode, if you want to try that you need an atom based unit. Even then I wouldn't think its worth spending the money on one just for that.

The NAS is fast enough for any backup from any of my many PCs all at the same time.

I wouldn't run the torrent program itself on the NAS, I would still run that on the PC and use the NAS as a mapped storage drive.

For transfer speeds, look at the QNAP site for specs and then half it. That will give you a realistic number.

JoeJoe, thanks a lot for the answer. Thought that nobody will reply ).

You got yourself exactly the 419p+?
Why you wouldn't run the torrent program itself on the NAS?
Its an important point for me to understand!
About Transcoding - its out of my plans. If some files will not play through DLNA, i'll access them by smb directly from some media player, that can play it.

I don't have the '+' version, just the 419P one.
This one here: http://qnap.com/pro_detail_feature.asp?p_id=127

I'm really happy with it, its very reliable. I hooked it up to an APC UPS for the first time today, it automatically recognized it and told me how long it would last in the event of a power failure.

I use it as a web server too.

The only thing I don't like about it is the Surveillance Station, its terrible, they should just remove it and not advertise it.

Since Mozy just increased their prices, I will be getting a another 2 drive QNAP, and putting that in another building, and use Remote Replication.

I don't use the built in torrent program as its just too much of a hassle, unless you are using it for just a few torrents. I haven't really played with it, but I leave my PC on all the time, I just map a net drive latter to the drive share and use it that way, its easier for me.

Thanks a lot my friend!

Good idea about the replication.

About the torrents - i definitely am going to use or rtorrent or transmission. I use it right now on my ASUS RT-N16 router, with DD-WRT, and its fine.
Try it please, may be a little hassle to install, but when it works it works ))

Best regards!

I will look into that torrent.
One of the closed torrent sites I use only allows certain clients.
Let us know how a qnap works out for you. I just updated the firmware last night, no problems, their product is very good.
