Tom's Hardware just ran an article about the Half a million dollar Petarack, from Aberdeen - a storage appliance providing One petabyte of storage in a single rack.

It runs a variant of OpenSolaris, and ZFS. And strongly advocates against hardware raid, and unlike the Pod approach uses enterprise SAS drives.

Looks Sweet - I think I have my next DIY project.....

What Does One Petabyte Of Storage (And $500K) Look Like?

Though I do think the product name could be better, it sounds like a device for torturing folks who harm small children.

Backblaze' design is much better.

Anyone hitting that link be warned that it's one of Tom's article-as-a-slideshow, designed explicitly to push up page views.

Tim,

I didn't mean to pimp for Tom's Hardware, but I found this to be instructional, yet another approach.

The Pod approach is significantly cheaper, and obviously more compact, but in terms of performance (enterprise grade drives, SAS/10G/FC HBAs) and reliability ( Dual ported drives, Multipath, ZFS ) the Aberdeen approach seems to offer clear advantages.

How did you mean the design was better?

I didn't think you were trying to promote Tom's. Just wanted people to know about the format.

I should have quantified my "better". I meant vastly more compact. People reading the Tom's article may think that's as small as a Petabyte gets.
