Ping packet loss

attilafe

New Around Here
Hello,
I have a strange problem on an AC68U and Merlin firmware 378.56
if I do a ping test from "Network Tools - Network Analysis" I always have this result:

PING www.google.com (173.194.116.82): 56 data bytes

--- www.google.com ping statistics ---
5 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss

My connection to it is working and surfing the internet

what is wrong ???

sorry for my question but I'm a noob in networking

thank you

Works for me, with a plain DHCP connection. What type of WAN connection does your ISP provide you (DHCP, PPPoE, etc...)?

Hello Rmerlin,
my connection is pppoe. This is a screenshot of the configuration.

virtually all other settings are default (firewall, LAN, etc.)

Thanks for the reply

Your configuration look weird to me. Why are you using a static IP that isn't routable? With PPPoE, you should normally set it to automatically obtain the WAN IP. Otherwise, it might confuse the router's routing.

I noticed a strange thing. if I change any setting that end the PPP connection for some reason, sometimes i'm able to get a valid ping test , but randomly ....

PS sorry for my bad english

I would remove that static IP configuration as it might be causing routing confusion.

I removed the configuration of static IP address, but the problem persists.
A stupid question, however the modem is configured with an IP xx0.1 and the router with an IP xx1.1, is correct, or must be on the same subnet?

It could be a problem for ISP? it is not strange that after several renewals of ppp connection, sometimes the ping test works until it renews again the IP address...

thanks for your patience

When using PPPoE, you don't need to put the modem on the same network as the router's WAN interface. Modem is bridged, so you are sending the PPPoE packets through it, regardless of its IP.

People tend to put them in the same subnet so they can remotely access the modem's web interface. However it MUST be a different subnet, so having .0.x and .1.x is actually the correct thing to do.

It's possible but unlikely, as it would happen even when pinging from a computer.

when I can not make a valid test ping from router interface, I can not do ping test to an external IP address from either a personal computer or a smartphone ......

Is web browsing working then?

Could be a particularity of your provider. Some of them are rather "creative" in their network setups...

Web browsing has always worked ... BitTorrent works ... everything works. only the ping and traceroute tests have problems ..... from the interface of the router and any other device. The absurd thing is that sometimes goes, and keep going until renewal for any reason the connection (for example change some setting that ends the PPP connection)

A question...

the router's firewall may be blocking the ping and traceroute? ICMP protocol?
