Please Help Me Understand Standard QoS Statistics Pie Chart

RouterManPDX

New Around Here
Hey all,

I recently turned on Standard QoS on my Asus AC88u router running 384.3 FW and I noticed something odd about the pie chart found on the "QoS Statistics" tab (see screenshot). It looks like there is some mysterious upload traffic classified as "Low" and "High" on the chart even though I've classified all devices on my network as "Lowest" (see screenshot).

What gives? I would think that if I marked all devices as "Lowest" it would ONLY show lowest on the Pie chart. What is creating "Low" and "High" upload traffic? I ask because at one point there was "Low" classified traffic uploading 1-2mb sec, when all of my devices were set to "Lowest".

I'm, hoping someone can chime in with some ideas about what I'm seeing :)

Thanks in advance !

That'd be the default class, for any traffic not classified by your rules. Local router traffic for instance might possibly be bypassing your rules.

To know in details, you'd have to dive into the Linux traffic classifier configuration.

Hey Merlin,

First, thank you so much for your quick reply. I do have 2 more follow-up questions if you could spare a little time....

1. I'm a noob with this, could you elaborate or give me an example of the "local router traffic" you mentioned that might be bypassing my QoS rules? Are you referring to internal router/switch activities like when one computer transfers files to another on the LAN? Do you suspect it could be only classify LAN to WAN traffic?

2. I cam across a post from someone on this forum that had a feature request to give you more detail about what's happening with QoS on your router (see link below). He showed a screenshot from Tomato's QoS details screen showing the actual traffic and it's classification. I think this would greatly help me track down this unclassified traffic I'm seeing. Any plans there? Did Asus ever fix their implementation of QoS?

Thanks so much! I really appreciate your feedback and willingness to share what you know!

1) No, I mean traffic generated by the router itself: DNS lookups, traffic generated by Download Master if you use it, etc...

2) I have no plans to devote time to Traditional QoS since it's still broken for many of the newer models.
