Poor Performance with Asus Blue Cave AC2600

Griffon783

New Around Here
Hey,

I recently purchased the asus blue cave router and configured an OpenVPN on it. I typically get about 300 Mb down/up and was expecting a performance hit, but when the VPN is activated I'm only getting 15 Mb down/up.

I know this router is far from the best, but I did expect better VPN performance than this. I know OpenVPN can only use one core of the processor and I am seeing that one of the cores is maxed out during a test.

Is there anything I can do to improve performance, or is this router just limited by it's processor?

Thanks.

Bluecave has extremely slow cpu for encryption performance.

The RT-AC86U is said to perform well for VPN.

The rt-ac86u need the Merlin firmware flashed to it to enable hardware acceleration stock firmware does not have it to my understanding.

Stock firmware has hardware acceleration working.

15 Mb down/up

That is a bit surprising, but perhaps not - even the GL-AR300M (QC-Atheros 9531 MIPS24K @ 650MHz) can do 18 Mbit/Sec over OpenVPN with OpenWRT - and the AR300M is quite a bit slower chip than the Lantiq/Intel SoC in the BlueCave...

Code:
AR-300M
type 16 bytes 64 bytes 256 bytes 1024 bytes 8192 bytes
aes-128 cbc 7896.65k 8725.36k 8957.60k 9049.38k 9060.68k
