Powerline - When new Gigabit Adapers ?

Have the new Powerline Gigabit (mimo ?) Adapters started to ship yet ?
If not, when are they expected to hit the market ?
Has Smallnetbuilder received a test model yet ?

I've seen brief mention of it here somewhere. I agree with those who say gigabit net yield of throughput is far, far less than you'll see.

Look in this website/forum's section on power line and MoCA

stevech,
Just hoping that it will yield a speed equivalent to at least USB 2.0 speed.

Updated - Just found a reference that said a Trendnet one is expected to ship in June, maybe smallnetbuilder will get a prototype to test in May ?

No sign of HomePlug AV2 MIMO adapters yet.

thiggins,

Thanks for update. ... Will keep checking back your home page in May/june then.

... Btw, I know its a guess at this point, but do you think that the New Powerline Gigabit - MIMO Adapters, when released, might yield at least USB 2 speed equivalent between 2 floors of a typical house ?

In some cases, sure. In most...probably not. I've seen some tests of the 600Mbps powerline adapters hitting around 30-35MB/sec in real world ideal connections (IE not some test lab)...but that is still the exception, not the rule. Most of the self same adapters were hitting more like 15-20MB/sec in most of the other connection tests (IE not the bestest outlet to outlet connections in the same house, more the average in that house) and cross phase/poor connections were staring more like 5-10MB/sec in the face.

Unless Gigabit powerline ethernet adapters bring something to the table that makes them significantly better than the old ones (yes, I do realize some of the stuff), probably looking at 40-50MB/sec best case possible and more like 20-30MB/sec in a good connection and 10-15MB/sec with a poor connection.

Those 10-15MBytes/sec speeds would be a large improvement over gen 1. Speed is greatly influenced by how/where the power line adapters (bridges) are place and what other signal-attenuating devices are electrically near (wire length), the worst being some forms of so-called surge suppressor plug strips.

My homeplugs would top out at 10MBytes/s and I never seen them get much higher than that. They must have had perfect electrical and had them close to eachother to get those 20-30something MBps rates.

20MB/s = 160Mbps which is more than 10/100BT wire speeds.
Do those Gen 1 HomePlug have gigE connections? I think not.

Are we confusing MB for Mb?

If you meant me... then...They are homeplug AV500 units. Gbe ports. and I wrote out the Megabytes/sec for the actual transfer speed

I realize now that I posted my question (this thread) in the wrong forum, but I see it has been moved here to the correct forum now.
Everyone, sorry, about that.
... Thanks all for the feedback on this question.

Here's a quote from a press release re TP-Link gigabit powerline adapters. I haven't seen one in the wild yet though and we're into Q2 now....

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- TP-LINK, a global provider of networking products, today announced the TL-PA8010 AV1000 Gigabit Powerline Adapter, its fastest Powerline adapter to date with throughput up to one gigabit.

Featuring the latest HomePlug AV2 standard, the device provides real gigabit throughput over a home or office's existing electrical wiring. Users can enjoy robust, high speed wired networking throughout their home or office for lag-free HD video streaming and online gaming.

The TL-PA8010 is interoperable with Powerline Adapters at various connection speeds, including 200, 500, 600 and 900Mbps, and is incredibly simple to set up. Users can get their networks up and running in a flash, simply by plugging the Powerline Adapters into available power outlets, eliminating the need for time-consuming and expensive renovations previously required to establish a whole-home wired Ethernet network.

TP-LINK's TL-PA8010 AV1000 Gigabit Powerline Adapter will be shown from January 7-10, 2014 at the Las Vegas Convention Center - Booth No. 36206. South Hall 4, Upper Level. The product will be available in the second quarter of 2014.

I need to expand my home network to support 2-location home theatre setups. I've been hoping a Powerline solution might show up. MoCA scares me...but it's probably simpler than I think.

MoCA is easy. If you can find some to buy.
Powerline may work today, not tomorrow, due to what's plugged in where, new dimmers, motors, etc.

MoCA is generally PnP and in my limited experience unless you have a real tangled mess of coax in your walls or WAYYYY too many splitters (and/or really bad ones), it'll chug along pretty much around "wire speed". IE on MoCA 1/1.1 that is roughly fast ethernet speeds of 100Mbps (I think 1.1, not sure on 1.0, is actually 110Mbps, but all 1/1.1 bridges I have seen only have fast ethernet ports on them).

D-Link has a new AV2 adapter. It's Gigabit and rated at 600Mbps. Has anyone tried this out yet? My TP-Link Power line adapters are getting shaky. Losing signal once in awhile. And I don't understand how they can be 500 Mbps when they only have a 10/100 port.

This would be an AV2 SISO adapter. The 600 Mbps is a spec game some manfs are playing. Depending on the design, you may or may not see a difference between them and AV 500 adapters.

The 10/100 port is a cost decision. Typical max throughput of AV500 adapters is ~ 80 Mbps

Are they redefining "throughput" to mean "raw modulation rate"?

Engineers say throughput is the net yield at the IP layer which is fraction of the raw bit rate.

Waiting for Godot

It's now October...
There was at least one AV2 MIMO chipset announcement late last year, and product announcements in Jan. (TP-Link TL-PA8010, AV1000) and June (Trendnet TPL-420E2K / TPL-421E2K, "Powerline 1200 AV2" whatever that means).
Since then, crickets... Anyone heard of any actual MIMO shipping product or even just a public review of a prototype?

I grew tired of waiting, so bought TP-Link "av600" (annoying when vendors make up their own designations that sound like they are names of standards but aren't) units. Performance is much worse than I expected: I expected degradation since I have no option but to use AC splitters at both ends, but the actual in-wall cable distance is <10m. I get a reported negotiated raw signalling rate (the adapters' SW utility, one link between two adapters) of Tx=54Mbps, Rx=29Mbps... Actual data rate is of course much lower. That's about half of what I was hoping for. Even when I attach the two adapters to neighboring sockets on the same splitter, it's still only Tx=73Mbps, Rx=38Mbps .
