This is not completely a Merlin question, but since I am using Merlin, and the options don't seem to be documented well in the ASUS manual, I thought I would ask here. (And the Fact that most Merlin uses seem WAAAAAY above average on this stuff)

Backround: AC68U, running 380.64_2, tied to a Centurylink Zyxel 1100a.

Can someone help we with the options for Internet Detection? (Disable / PPP Echo / DNS Probe) Is you select PPP Echo, You get to additional options PPP Echo Interval and PPP Echo Max Failures.

The reason I'm asking:

I ran the 1100a as traditionally for months, no issues. At the beginning of December, I configured it in Transparent bridging, for all the right reasons, and it ran great for several weeks. I started getting dropping of the internet for 10-15 seconds at at time HUNDREDS of times per day. (Verified this using opendns, which tracks your external IP. I was loosing authentication, and then would end up reconnecting, which would give me a new external IP)

Trying not to be THAT guy, that doesn't rule thing out for the right way, I checked external DSL connection box, my dedicated wires, etc, because i was confident that this was a copper problem to my house. Everything check out great. Good SNR etc. In frustration, I just put the 1100a back into routing mode.....and everything was perfect again.

So now I've convinced myself that the authentication TO the 1100a is causing the drops, and that it is because i have not configured the detection of a live link correctly in the AC68U. I was using PPP Echo detection, with 6 for the Echo Interval, and Max failures of 10. (The defaults) Should I be stretching either of those out, or changing my detection type? Or should I just disable?

I apologize if I shouldn't have posted this here, but I knew that one of you probably has played with this, and might be able to give me some pointers.

TIA

Since you have put your modem in modem+router mode, can you try to put Asus router in router mode as well(with WAN connection as DHCP)? If it is indeed PPPOE issue, then this setting should not get connection drop. However, if you still get disconnection in this mode, you might want to try resetting your router, and config the router with minimal features: WAN+WiFi only, no QoS for example.
