PPTP VPN access to remote router IP

Dan C

New Around Here
I've just started using ASUS WRT Merlin firmware and am very impressed at the reliability and consistency

I have two Asus RT-AC56U routers set up with PPTP vpn service. One is local and one is at a remote location. Both have their own ISP service. Once connected by vpn (with laptop using win 10) I'd like to gain access to all ip's of the remote router's subnet. I'm not able to do this right now. I've used KONG firmware on an Asus RT-N16 with PPTP VPN service in the past and was successful at it but not with Merlin firmware (current version).

Local router #1 has a subnet of 192.168.1.xxx (connected via WIFI from my laptop) and so does the remote router. Both router's have the same ip for local access (192.168.1.1). This setup was not a problem with KONG firmware in the past. What settings am I missing?

Currently, I can actually achieve what I'm trying to do if I connect my laptop to my mobile phone's hotspot and vpn into the remote router with my laptop. I am able to access the remote router's UI and all other ip address's, just not when connected by WIFI to my own local asus router. I'm not sure what settings I need to change on either the local or remote router.

Tell Windows to use the remote endpoint as the default gateway.

This will still be a problematic issue, as PPTP was never designed to handle overlapping subnets (in fact, pretty much any VPN technology will have problem with this).

If the local router subnet was different than the remote, would the default gateway in windows still need to be set to the remote endpoint?

Thanks for your help.

No, unless you wanted to route all your Internet traffic through the tunnel.
