Print server

I recently got a printer and am trying to get it to work through the router port. The printer is a hp laserjet p2035.
I tried accessing it through the EZ print and through LPR. Using both methods, it installs the print driver just fine, but never works for test pages etc. Can anyone help me get it working?

With my old printer, I was able to set LPR up using these instructions:
https://www.asus.com/Us/support/FAQ/114024
I was connected to the USB 2.0 port via a USB 2.0 hub. I now have a wifi printer and no longer have this setup.

At a site I support, I have a brother printer connected to the router via Ethernet cable and via wifi. It is configured as a network printer and not a LPR. Once connected to the router, I was able to see it's MAC address. I then created a static IP for it. Once I did that, I then accessed the printers menu using the static IP address assigned to the printer to finish the network printer setup.

Yeah, no luck. Not sure why. It installs the driver fine on the computer end, but always throws errors saying can't print to it.

So, the printer is getting a valid IP address? Do you have windows client? Are you performing the add printer option in windows? Right click on the printer icon. There may be a troubleshooting or menu option to choose. Try and google the error message to see if it sheds some light on the situation. Can you access the printer menu from typing the printers ip address in a browser? There may be more settings in the printer menu there that you nave to configure.

The IP address will be that of the router.

I should clarify, the printer is connected via usb, so I don't think it will have a unique ip.
Thanks for the clarification. When you said router port in the OP, I assumed it was a LAN Ethernet port :)

If I had my choice, setting it up on the Ethernet vs LPR is an easier setup for the clients in my opinion, after having done both setups.

Since LPR is giving you fits, try setting it up using Ethernet connection to the router using the instructions on the manual here:
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01460703 on page 26

Let us know how it goes.

He has a P2035 which is USB only.

It's got parallel - so there's always the chance for a JetDirect adapter (erm, nope)...

Funny - Rmerlin and I had a recent chat in another thread - why bother with USB Printer services these days?

Not many people use it - present case excepted - and it's hella effort to make it work with every vendor out there... as every vendor seems to do it differently - and some are smart, where the rendering engine and all that are inside the printer, but others are "soft" in that they do rely on the host computer to do most of the effort...

There is a FOSS effort related around IPP (which is similar to Airprint) for a vendor agnostic implementation...

Yeah, I was hoping it would be a quick plug in to get working like dd-wrt, but from what I am seeing, lots of people have issues with the stock Asus apps for this.
It actually does have a parallel port as well as usb.

did you install it directly connected to the PC by USB first ?

Assuming you have the driver installed as above-
If the router supports Bonjour, download Bonjour for Windows ( google will find the apple page), install, connect the printer to the router, power up and let Bonjour search for it.

download Bonjour for Windows

Or just download/install iTunes for Windows, it also installs a proper mDNS/Bonjour stack (even for Windows 10, which does mDNS kinda broken).

The iTunes link is easier to find, and has more current code than the old Bonjour for Windows...

Thanks for the help! I got it working. Here is what I did:
Downloaded Win8.1x64 drivers (most recent), plugged printer in directly to my computer proved it worked. Then plugged it back into the router and rebooted.
Added the printer, via control panel and no luck. Then removed the printer and added it as a printer on my local computer as a print server via printer management and it works.
