Printer connected to Asus Router, won't print

I have a Laser printer Brother HL-L8250CDN. I have connected it through USB Cable to my Router AC87U and the printer is showing up on my Router WebUI. The Asus AC87U Router has the latest Firmware 378.55.

Through USB Application TAB I have downloaded the ASUS EZ printer sharing Utility. At the bottom of the utility I see the message "Please follow the Window OS's directions to install printer driver" but after I clicked finish nothing happened.

In Control Panel → Devices and Printers my Brother Printer is showing up but when I try to print something it does not respond anymore and the job stays forever in the printer queue. If I click on the printer in the Device and Printers folders everything explorer.exe hangs up and restarts itself.



What am I doing wrong ?

I connected the Brother Printer through LAN cable and then back again with USB cable (A to B). The Brother Printer now has got a correct IP Address, Subnet Mask, IP Gateway and DNS Server.

The disadvantage with the USB Cable is that now I can't see through the Asus Ac87U Web Interface what the IP Address of the Printer is (although I know the IP Address of the printer). Also I can't get anymore to the Web Interface of the Printer by typing the Printer IP Address (http://192.168.1.46). Does anyone know why ? It was no problem when the printer was connected to the router via LAN Cable.

Also I see that although I am able to print from my PC it is not possible to do so from my Android Tablet device. Via the Lan Cable it was possible.

Using an Ethernet connection to your printer from your router/LAN is probably a simpler setup and more reliable than a USB connection from the router. With a LAN connection you are not dependent on any firmware on the router.

Disconnect the USB and Ethernet cable from the printer and power off the printer.

Then remove the printer using control panel from any PC that has previously connected to or printed to this printer.

Plug the Ethernet cable back into the printer.

Then go to each PC that you want to print using this printer and tell the PC you want to add a network printer and have it search for and select your networked printer.

For phones and tablets you will have to do the selection process using whatever utility they offer for printing. I sometimes use Google Cloud Print for these type of devices. I can also e-mail it to the Epson e-mail address for my printer and that works as does the Epson App.

Connecting the printer via Ethernet cable will be preferred way. Even if USB connection works it won't be as reliable as much. I have Brother color laser MFC-9130CW on WiFi connection, solid as rock. Using cable would be even better. Driver should on each and every user. Sure you installed Brother software suite which includes driver and utilities on your PC?

Yes, using LAN cable was very simple and I could print from my Android Tablet too. But I want to have the Router LAN Ports free for other devices.

I guess that it is not possible this way (printer and router connected through USB cable) to print from Android devices nor it is possible to reach the Printer Web Interface, am I right ?

Usually tablets use Airprint or NFC feature. One reason I got WiFi printer.

AirPrint is for Apple Devices if I am not mistaken. I must check if my Printer has NFC features.

Just buy an inexpensive 5 or 8 port GBe switch and you'll have gained a few ports too.

I connected my printer again via LAN cable (through TCP/IP Port). With the USB Cable connection (Router to Printer) I experience too much problems.

Same problem as OP, Just got a new Asus RT-AC86U a few days ago and installed printer driver (got same os message as op) Unfortunately I started getting BSOD's every time I would scan for rootkits using Malwarebytes, took me days to figure out it was the printer driver causing
the BSOD's!
Why the heck is Asus providing a 5+ year old BROKEN driver for a brand new model router, just ridiculous.
