I'd like to dedicate this thread for NS4600 bug listing and hopefully PromiseNasDude will pass this to the design engineers to address them in the next firmware release.
1. Bit Torrent is not working.
2. Waken up from sleep mode may cause the Raid 1 to be rebuilt. I think because one of the drive doesn't wake up fast enough.
3. Performance drops occasionally for no reason.
4. FireFly server sees files with extension *.m as a music files. I had a many Matlab files in the PUBLIC folder and they all appeared in the music library until I moved out of any standard folder (DOWNLOAD, PICTURE, VIDEO..)

Ok, I am not able to access the NS4600 using via PASM or SmartNavi. Reset and reboot didn't help. It's been running for 35 days and I deleted all my data from the PC thinking I was in a good hand :(.
This is the second time I got this problem: deleting user and and changing the permission of the folders cause the system unaccessible. I am still be able to ftp to it but all my data are no where to find. Another thing about this POC is that it won't let me access to the device unless I have the original HDDs and if it can't recover the original volume then I am stuck.
I put back all the drives and prayed if ii can come back to live. Meanwhile, I am not able to disable the beeping so my every one is mad about it.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Whew! I am not able to control it using PASM or SmartNavi but all data are back to life :)
I am sending it back for service but I am so relief at this point.

More NS4600 issues

I don't know about you guys, but I'm beginning to feel like we are doing Promise's field beta-testing for them on the NS4600.

I had an access error which I traced to an IP address conflict. I changed the NS4600 to static IP and gained access again.

My connection to the NS4600 has degraded so much that I can't access it again. What gives?

I contacted Promise support and was told that my HDD's were not on the compatible list. So I've ordered 4 x 1 TB Caviar Black HDD's - which are on the list. I hope it makes an improvement.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Promise has a major upgrade to the NS4600 firmware coming. Maybe that will fix your issues.

Ns4600

Thansk thig,
I had heard this as well and that it was due out in December sometime. In the meantime I think I may have some set-up issues with my network.

Do you know if there's a networking for Dummies guide out there somewhere?

Thanks again.

Do not upgrade firmware SR1

I'd like to let you know that the SR1 is not good and the rich gui doesn't do any good but taking cpu and memory resources. Acessing the nas is very slow and the cpu utilization meter shows 100% most of the time w.o doing anything.
Stay with what you have. I am not able to reverse the older firmware and I am stuck now.
TT.

Ns4600 sr1

Hello,

I have upgraded to SR1 as well and now the harddrives are not turned off anymore when they are not used although I have set a specific stand-by time. I have contacted Promise and they promised to investigate but no solution until now. Indeed downgrade to the previous firmware appeared not to be possible. I have tried to flash the firmware in safe mode as well, but than I get the message that the firmware file is not found.

Hi,
Are you able to access the PASM? do you experience slow response ?
Try this?
- Turn off bittorent
- turn off mySQL server
These two plug-ins cause memory leak. Everytime I go to a page, the memory usage increases and cpu utilization goes up.

I experienced the same problem. If i remove the HDD, the LED remains blue.
Press and hold the power button won't shutdown.
TT.

I can access the PASM, not slower than before.
Strange thing is that with my NS4600 each time a enable - disable the plug-ins the CPU utilization goes down until 0. Memory usage doesn't change much.
With the old firwmare I had to keep the plug-ins off otherwise the harddrives didn't go into stand-by. But with SR1 it doesn't matter.

Power button does work on my NS4600.

Same problem here

After upgrading to SR1, the hdds don't go into stand-by no matter what (torrent and sql plugins are off).

Additionally, I'm unable to delete any files I've copied to the NS4600. It seems like they reintroduced an old problem that has been fixed in the previous firmware.

Downgrading not possible, the NAS is now more or less a useless piece of furniture. I shut it down, as I don't fancy it running on full power all the time.

The only upside of SR1 is that the firefly server supports m4a extension music files.
I don't understand how Promise released a firmware with so many problems. I don't need the iSCSI and mySql server.
New bugs from SR1
- Fails to spin down HDDs to save power
- NAS thought the file system went bad after resume power on from scheduled power on/off
- Not be able to select the default folders from drives. I have put music files in MUSIC folder from volume1 but the new firmware makes the MUSIC folder from volume 2 visible under smb. I have to ftp and manually select volume1 to access the files.
- BT causes memory leak.

NS4600 back to retailer

I have sent the NS4600 back to my retailer and got my money back. Bought a QNAP 459 Pro, more expensive, but I like it much more than the NS4600.

Set Turn Off Drives

After I updated my NS4600's firmware to ns4600_020112 it started saying that drive 3 was unplugged and then plugged in causing a RAID rebuild. The rebuild took 10 hours and after 30 mins of normal operation the same thing happened.

Tech support was no help as all they could say was that my Seagate ST31500341ASs werent supported.

I finally set Turn Off Drives to Never and the problem went away.

New firmware

The new firmware (SR1.1) seems to be better. Unit goes into stand-by, the files are still accessible and for the moment I don't have any other problems.
Could this be the firmware we wanted in the first place?

I'll post updates if any problem occurs....

SR1.1 appears to be better

I recommend the SR1.1. Fixed a couple issues i had in SR1.0
BT is till buggy but not my concern. Performance is good.

Sr1.1

I've had the SR1.1 for 2 weeks now and I can confirm is better than SR1. I do have problems (again) with file permissions though... I checked right after upgrading to SR1.1 and I was able to access files properly. 2 weeks later, I cannot delete folders. I can delete the files (most of them at least) but not the folders.
Given that the last time I reset permissions the volume went bust (using RAID 10) and the unit froze up while trying to recover it, am not so keen on doing it again. Folders can still be moved and renamed, so at least I can keep things organized, sort of.
Maybe is just a Mac related problem, is anyone using only windows having the same problem?

I didn't notice a problem with BT.

ftp to the NAS as admin user and delete the emtpy folder?
I have problem once and I forgot whether i used windows 7 or ftp command to delete folders.

Do you use itune? does the firefly server work with Itune 9? it doesn't work with my 64bit itune 9.
