QNAP TS-212 or Synology DS211j?

New Around Here
Hi guys,

would be nice if you could help me with my decision which NAS to buy.
QNAP TS-212 or Synology DS211j?

- Price of both machines is almost the same
- CPU & RAM is the same
- Which one works better with my Android phone?
- The QNAP NAS has lots of flash. Is that important? And when yes, for what?
- The NAS will be used as a family NAS. Usually one user at a time, but probably with a few services running (like BT, ssh etc.).
- Is it generally possible to access the NAS as root and install/remove any service/programme like on a "normal" linux pc?
- Is it possible to use a ssh-tunnel?
- Are the any alternatives?

Thanx in advanced for your help!

I'm considering the same two models to be used in my gigabit home network primarily for streaming movies (HD and SD) to multiple TVs throughout the house. I'd like to know if I'd be able to stream movies to two or three TVs at a time.

One important feature to consider is that the QNAP TS-212 has 256MB of DDR2 RAM while the Synology only has 128MB.

I'm actually considering spending $99 more on the QNAP TS-219P+ which seems like it would be much more powerful with 512MB of DDR3 RAM and a 1.6Ghz Processor. It also adds hot-swappable drive bays and 2 eSATA ports and goes for about $299.

The amount of memory is not as important as it may seem, take a look at the performance figures. I'd recommend focusing on the NASPT tests that best fit how you are going to be using your NAS.

Few years back, the 'vette and the Camaro ran the same engine, the LT1. But tuning and alike on the Vette gave it a clear performance advantage.
If you just were looking at engine displacement, you would think they were equivalent.

Hot Swap is a clear distinguisher. The eSata and USB are important if you are going to use them.

Take a look at the on-line Live Demos of the Web UIs for a feel for each GUI and set of capabilities.

Software

Thank you for your answers. +100€ for the 219+ is a lot of money. I'm not sure whether or not it's worth it...

What about the software?
Which one is better? QNAP or Synology? Which one has the better Android-apps?

How about my question about the root-access and ssh-tunneling? Are these systems highly configurable via the shell or is it a closed blackbox like a Microsoft-product ;-) ?

Edit: What about a hardwarefailure? Is it possible to access the data on RAID-1-systems via a linux system when the NAS is broken?
