New Around Here
Hi,

I'm new to this forum and not what anyone would consider technically savvy so please try and empathise. I'm looking to buy a NAS server for mulitple purposes and after much procrastination and research keep coming back to one particular model. The QNAP TS-269L. The primary reason being is so that I can watch all my movie files via the HDMI port and connect it directly to my TV without having to use additional equipment EG media players PS4 etc.

As well as having a personal cloud and remote access for down/uploading files while away from my local area network. My main concern is I can't determine if the unit will transcode MKV and certain other formats like MP4, H.264 etc as a lot of my files are in MKV format. Is anyone able to confirm if in fact the NAS will play MKV and the other mentioned files.

Also if anyone has had hands on experience or better yet owns this unit or a similar model can you please advise me of how good the NAS is. Such as ease of use, UI and apps/mobile apps etc. Thanks for your help :)

With an Intel Atom dual core cpu, this won't transcode in real time I'd guess.

Note: For the best HD Station experience, QNAP recommends upgrading your Turbo NAS memory to 2GB or more. The playback and quality of some video files may be affected due to the current CPU and GPU's decoding capability.

More importantly, the noise of the unit would be very annoying for me in a home digital theatre setup.

I have the TS-469L with 4x 4TB Red drives installed in my home office. While I can tune out most of the noise as I'm concentrating on my work projects, I am always aware of it's presence. Especially if I access any data from it. I would expect the TS-269L to be the same or noisier and that would disqualify it from a digital theater setup for me (unless you have the volume up so high it doesn't matter).

Also if anyone has any technical information about how I could connect the NAS to a media player. Specifically a WDTV-Live then that would be extremely helpful to me. Once again thank you.

Suggestion: Compare/contrast Synology and QNAP. Both have on-line demos. Don't over-buy.

HDMI direct from a NAS, as I've read, is not good. Adds a lot of cost, and most/all can't do full 1080. But this is not from experience. Transcoding on a NAS is not a good idea. A NAS is a file server. Transcoding, even batched, takes more CPU power than an affordable NAS has.

I know that DLNA is one way to get interoperability between certain media players and newer TV, and file servers. But you could learn more about these multimedia topics on this web site:

Is it the fan noise that bothers you or the disc head movement that causes the noise?

I ask because I am thinking about this unit for my home office as well. My current setup is almost silent so the Synology equivalent (which is supposed to be really quiet) might work better for me.

It is the fan noise that is the issue for me.
