Which would be the best of these 2 NAS devices? I want to use an internet cam for capturing video/motion and record to NAS and stream movies to a DMR device for viewing on my TV. Thanks!

EDIT: TS-239 Pro II not 293.

I am no NAS expert, but I am in the process of buying one. I still have to decide, but the 239 Pro II and the DS710+ are in my choices.

In term of functionality, there are pretty similar. I'ld suggest you try the live demos of QNAP and Synology on their websites to see which menu you like best.

In Canada, the Synology is about 100$CDN more expensive.

The Synology has slots drives at the back while the QNAP are in the front. For this, I find the QNAP better.

Synology has better performances overall over the QNAP.

The TS-259 Pro is the more appropriate equivalent to the DX710+, as both have the dual core Atom D510. The TS-239 Pro II is only single core Atom D410.

The Synology is expandable, which is nice, but the DX510 is expensive and consumer the 1 eSATA port. Plus, you are now driving multiple drives through 1 SATA interface, which has performance impacts. The QNAP unit is not expandable, but has 2 eSATA ports and 5 USB, versus 1 eSATA/3 USB on the Synology. The QNAP has dual GigE NICs vs 1 in the Synology.

Synology seems to have a little more overall polish on their bundled apps, but QNAP has been working on that. QNAP is all metal, Synology is plastic. QNAP already has an iPhone/iPod Touch app, and just released an Android beta. Synology is supposed to release one with DSM 2.4.

I'm not sure who offers better camera support to be honest. QNAP specifically sells products for camera use, so they may put a little more emphasis into their camera piece of the firmware.

Oops, you are correct. I was looking at the wrong model when I looked at the CPU spec. So the TS-239 Pro II is the right one to compare to. Strictly from a hardware standpoint, you do get more for the same money in the QNAP in terms of ports (USB, eSATA, and NIC)

Bumping up this thread since I'm trying to choose a nas, and the 710+ and TS-259 Pro cost the same amount here (less then 5% difference).

Nobody is directly comparing these two. Looking at the tests here it seems the 710+ is quite a bit faster then the TS-239 Pro II, but would the 259 turn that around?

edit: now I found a TS-259 Pro+ for the same price...

Don't buy QNAP. I did and I think their support downright sucks. I'd definetely buy a Synology over QNAP.
