I bought a QNAP TS-439U-SP and connected it to my Cisco SLM2048 switch and could not discover the NAS, finally I used a direct link to my pc and it was found and I was able to configure it with the proper IP settings. Once I put it back on the switch it could not be found once again, so to determine the problem I hooked it into the switch on the back of my firewall, and it was discovered no problem, so it appears its a problem with the switch, to test this out I switched the IP settings to DHCP and it was able to pick up an IP from the firewall as well (also my DHCP server).

Whats interesting is the link lights on the switch show a gigabit link, yet if I go into the administation console on the switch, it shows those ports with no connection.

Any ideas where to start troubleshooting? So far I have tried disabling port trunking and using the LAN1 port, enabling jumbo frame support on the switch, and disconnected my firewall when it was on the switch to see if it was creating a problem, I dont really have any other ideas on why this switch will not connect my QNAP NAS, but every other switch will (I also tried an old netgear switch I had laying around).

I really dont want to leave it on my firewall as its only 10/100 and my switch is gigabit.

Thanks!

I don't think you can force the port speed/mode on the QNAP. Have you tried doing that on the switch? How about posting over in the QNAP forums?

I have it on auto for the port speed on the switch, but I have since found out that I believe its a problem with the switch itself.

If I plug the NAS into the switch on the back of the firewall it is discovered, I also tried it on another switch I had laying around and it worked as well, but when I plug it into the SLM2048 switch, I get a link light which shows a gigabit connection, but when I cheque the port status in the administration screen for the switch it shows no connection, and will not be discoverable.

I also have had another computer drop off the network and not able to communicate with the DHCP server, but when I plug it into the firewall it can get an address no problem, so it seems to be the same problem, however the rest of the computers on my network can get a DHCP address just fine, its very strange, I really don't know where to go from here, and cisco tech support seems to be non existant.

I understand the problem is with the SLM2048. Do you have an option to force the link speed to 1000 instead of auto? Have you tried setting the port to 100 Mbps?

Some NICs and switches just don't autonegotiate properly and you may have such a combination. Only solution is to connect the QNAP to another switch that works, then uplink it to the SLM2048.

I did try to set it at 100 Mbps and 1000 Mbps manual with no effect, I also did this with the computer that dropped off the switch, I then tried to take another computer and put it into a different port on the switch, it also dropped access, once I put it back to the original switch port, got access again, so it was like the switch was not refreshing itself, somehow frozen.

Luckily enough I was able to get everyone off the network for a brief time and I was able to try rebooting the switch which worked and am having no problems now, seems to be working great.

Thanks for your help!

There must be something going on with this switch, as now when I enable the port trunking in any mode, it causes the network computers in network neighborhood to disapear, yet I can reach them manually, and the mapped drives still work, very strange.

Also I figured I would post it in the same thread, but under the compatible UPS for this unit, it only lists the APC smart series up to the 1500VA, I would like to buy a smart series 2200 so I can run a few other devices off it in my small server room, since this is not on the compatibility list, will I run into problems with how the software shuts the NAS down? from my understanding it should still work correctly? The specific model is the APC SUA2200RM2U

Thanks!
