Hi guys,
I have a question about implementing QoS in my home network. My home network has expanded over the years. It was originally just a 10/100 network between a few computers and a printer all in the same room. Now, it's a gigabit/wifi network across 4 rooms, with computers, tablets, phones, video game consoles, bluray players, and A/V receivers.
Currently, none of my devices support QoS, and I'm thinking it may help my setup (I'm often streaming music or video from my computers in one room to my home theater in another room). I'm not seeing performance issues per se, but I need to buy a new router and a 1-2 new switches anyway (multiple devices in a single room need to be connected to the network) so I thought perhaps it was good time to look into QoS.
My current setup is like this:
Cable modem, main Wifi router (WRT54g), and 5 port gigabit switch ("main switch") are all in my network panel. From there, the 4 ports off of the "main switch" connect to 4 rooms in my house. In each room is another gigabit switch ("room switches") to connect all the devices in that room.
Most of my streaming happens either over the wifi or across rooms. For example, all the computers in the office only transfer files between each other (going through the "room switch"), but we never stream music or video to between computers. However, the computers in the office will stream to our home theater or our DLNA player in the other bedrooms ("room switch A" -> "main switch" -> "room switch B").
My question is, do all my switches need to support QoS, or just my "main switch"? I'll also be making sure my wifi router supports QoS to cover the wifi devices.
Thanks in advance!
