In other threads, several people (including me) have reported that the internet LED on their R7800 is constantly blinking, even when no clients are connected to the router.

For me, the blinking only stops if I unplug my cable modem from the WAN port. The blinking resumes as soon as I plug the modem back in.

Is there anyone who is running a recent firmware version (stock or Voxel) and does NOT have constant blinking on the internet LED? If yes, please tell us which firmware version you are using.

Same here, nothing to worry about. This is minor network chatter of a few bytes or so that constantly go in and out

Also the occasional port scan as well updating of the time by connecting to Netgears NTP server etc, there is always chatter out or one kind or another, so a blinking light as microchip says is nothing to worry about

I had a router that you could turn the "Flashing" lights to solid via the UI and it had a physical switch to turn the lights off. Personally, I like the flashing, I have caught unauthorized traffic on my network because of them. Also I grew up in the age of retail routers and they all flash!!

You can turn the lights off in stock firmware if you like and it annoys you. Just head to Advanced -> Advanced Setup -> LED Control Settings

Interesting new observation:

Today my cable modem was replaced. Old modem was a Hitron, replacement is an Arris. With the old modem attached, the internet LED on the R7800 would blink constantly at a steady rate. With the replacement modem, the internet LED now blinks irregularly based on activity, which is what I expected.

The R7800 connects to the new modem using a static ip instead of dhcp. Otherwise the R7800 config is unchanged.

I don't know if the modem swap is what made the difference, or the change from dhcp to static on the internet port of the R7800. In any case, this change was a pleasant surprise.

Were you able to reboot the router without having to disconnect the ethernet cable to the cable modem?
