random wifi issues when using wifi extender 2.4Ghz

Hi

A bit difficult to explain in detail but I'll try outlining the issue.

I have an AC66 with merlin's firmware (kudos!). right now on 344 version.

I've recently installed a wifi Extender (linksys re2000) to ensure coverage in the whole house.
Setup of the linksys was a snap. 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz setup in no time.
anyway.. after adding the extender I am starting to see some issues.
When sitting at my computer Internet will go down.. the wifi Icon will show connected but with the yellow (!) 'no internet' .. then after a few minutes it'll go back to 'connected with wifi' and then all is good.
This happens around once an hour I think.
I started accessing the linksys webIF to see if there was anything there and I noticed that the 2.4Ghz had only been connected a few minutes whereas the 5Ghz had been connected for much much longer time.

First off I don't understand if it's the 2.4Ghz band that's having issues then why am I even seeing the problem on my Laptop which should be running on 5Ghz..

I can't find anything on the asus in the logs.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this? any setting on the asus? or some other trick?

I had a look at the linksys to see if I could just disable the 2.4Ghz to test but apparently I cannot.
So I reset it and just didn't connect the 2.4Ghz to anything.. so now I have the linksys only repeating the 5Ghz band and then just a 'dummy' 2.4Ghz.
