New Around Here
Hi all,

Newbie here, hoping to get some advice from more experienced users. I'm looking to re-visit the setup of my home network.

Some facts from the attached diagram:
  • We have FiOS, but I don't use the FiOS router (Actiontec) for anything. WiFi is turned off, PPTP ports are forwarded, and it has one static lease for my e2000
  • The e2000 is running DD-WRT and is my DHCP and PPTP VPN server
  • I have a wired connection to another e2000 running DD-WRT that is a DHCP forwarder
  • Both routers broadcast our home WiFi SSID
  • The main router has a bridge to a virtual interface and broadcasts a guest SSID

I'd like to get AC coverage in my house, and the 2nd router has a better position in my house for this. I'm looking to replace it with an ASUS RT-AC66U. Would this be feasible, since the main router isn't the more powerful router?

Also, since the main router is in the basement, does anyone have a good suggestion for a wired router that will run DD-WRT?

Any help you would appreciated!

I don't think I could recommend an RT-AC66U for the best AC coverage right now. The R7000 and the RT-AC68U share that honor with my preference (all things considered) towards the RT-AC68U).

At the very least; I would be buying both, testing them back to back and returning the lessor performer. Still think the RT-AC66U is not in today's league (it is almost a 2 year old router now).

I was considering the 66 over the 68 just based on cost. But if you think it's worth the money, I'll go with the 68. I've never used Netgear equipment personally.
