Any thoughts on the new Atom-based ReadyNAS Ultra 4 ($628) launched this week versus the diskless ReadyNAS NVX with Business Features ($599 after rebate at NewEgg, plus a 1.5tb hard disk for $9 as part of a combo deal)?

My first inclination was that the NVX BE was a better choice, but the Atom-based ReadyNAS Ultra apparently has some benefits like support for files over 2tb in size.

Think there would be much of a performance difference in real world usage?

Thanks!

Here's what we know now.

Ultra 4 is a Home NAS and excludes some features found on the Business edition NAS products such as AD Integration, RSYNC, SNMP, Snapshot, etc. Ultra 4 also has a 3 year warranty versus 5 year for Netgear Business NAS products.

Ultra 4 does include a couple media features that Netgear hasn't given details whether they will also be included in current Business edition NAS products.

Ultra 4 performance should be about 15-20% faster than NVX. Real world may vary.

Ultra 4 does allow files up to 16TB in size versus 2TB for NVX (individual filesize, not total volume). Ultra 4 does allow iSCSI volumes up to 16TB versus 2TB for NVX. Ultra 4 does allow Timemachine volumes up to 4TB versus 2TB for NVX. I don't foresee this being a deal breaker for 95% of users....

Netgear plans to release more details on the Ultras late next week on the www.readynas.com website.

Ultra products should be available before the end of July.

Note, Ultra Plus NAS model(s) are also coming in September and a 2 bay Ultra product is coming in October.

No news on new Business edition NAS products at this time though I expect the Atom architecture to make its way into the Business edition products soon enough. Prices will likely be higher.....

Keep an eye on www.readynas.com for more details.

Finally, the NVX is no slouch. If you need a NAS now, go for it. The rebates help make it very competitively priced.

Excuse my density, but isnt a piece of software required to serve up the files from the nas to the 360? What is the piece on the netgear that does this? On the 360, there is a screen that seems to require a windows media installation running. How does netgear 'spoof' a windows box?
