New Around Here
Long time Merlin fan, new forum member. I started experimenting with OpenVPN support with Merlin's great firmware on my AC66. My primary objective is to allow secure surfing from public wifi on my Nexus 5.

After lots of reading, I set it up and I "think" it is working great. Seemed almost too easy. I am hoping I did not miss something.

Here is all I did:
1) Started OpenVPN Server on AC66 - TUN, UDP, UserName/Pass=No, RedirectInternetTraffic=Yes

2) Export OpenVPN config file from AC66 - This opvn file has the CA/Cert/Key. I did not change anything, it seems to have all the needed information. Most tutorials talked about using easyRsa and manually creating. Is the Merlin firmware just that slick that it does it all for you???

3) Installed OpenVPN Connect on my Nexus5 - Imported opvn file from #2 above, and connected no problem.

Guess with most tutorials showing more involved manual editing of vars.bat, certs, etc....I did not do any of that. Does the Merlin OpenVPN streamline the process that much?

Thanks!!!

It's actually Asus who streamlined that process, by adding automatic cert/key generation, and username/password based authentication. It might not be as secure as generating unique keypairs for every users and relying on that for authentication, but for home/SOHO usage it's good enough - still way better than PPTP.
