New Around Here
Hello,

I would like to buy a router but I'm a bit lost as there are dozens of them out there. Here are my requirements :
- QoS : I want Skype and Games to run smoothly while I backup on the cloud or have BitTorrent running
- Basic security against DoS etc
- Basic to advanced Firewall
- Throughput > 30M
- Enough simultaneous connections for any P2P usage
- Wake on Lan would be nice but I'm not going to pay more for it
- Open Source OS would be nice but not required (I'm becoming paranoid against american companies software thanks Mr Snowden)

Could you please recommend a router fullfilling these requirements?

Thanks in advance

your backup- will hog upstream capacity - which is low.
First backup is of course huge.
I recommend using USB drives or a small NAS for backup. Faster, more secure.

I already own a raid-5 NAS. But I'm not protected against theft, fire... So, I chose to backup datas I realy don't want to lose on a remote server.
Yes, this process isn't bandwidth friendly, so I limited its upstream at 50KB (out of 1Mbps).
I don't like this solution, I restrain my backup process but still can't ensure that Skype, online gaming (...) have enough bandwidth.
Moreover, sometime my wife is running emule which also eats some bandwidth I'm not aware of.

This is why I am looking for a router able to smoothly manage my upstream.

So far I've come across :
o RT-N16 = 77€
+ Throughput should keep up with any connections
+ Alternative soft available if im not happy with stock one

o PC Engine ALIX = 100€ + Switch
+ Throughput should keep up with any connections
+ It could later be recycled into a firewall or whatever due to its popular x86 architecture
+ Switch would be managed
- No stock soft, I can"t take the easy way
- Expensive

o DIR-655 = 100€
+ Throughput should keep up with any connections
+ D-Link makes some good networking product
- No alternative software

o TW100 = 40€ + switch
+ Switch would be managed
+ Cheap
- Possible security issues due to NSA proximity

Any thought about this? Any alternative I didn't list?

Scratch the 54GL off your list. Old technology and flashing updated firmware can't overcome the lack of memory and processing power.

If for some reason you want to add one to your network you should be able to pick up a refurbished one in the US flashed with either DD-WRT or Tomato for $25 - $35.

I would get the RT-N16. Since Asus put out Asuswrt and Merlin made some bug fixes to it and thus putting out his own version, the RTs have become more powerful. But the RT-N16 is pretty long in the tooth. Spend some more money and get a newer RT and be future proof.

I suggest: Don't buy top of the line WiFi router. Rather, spend assuming you'll replace it every 2 years or so as technology marches on, e.g., 802.11ac client devices will emerge and wind up in your new phones/tablets, then you have a rationale for a new 11ac WiFi router (maybe).

Really if you want the best QoS controls Get the Meraki Z1 for home use or get the MX60W for business use. I love Meraki's QoS and traffic shaping controls.
