Greetings to all...
Selecting my first NAS here, for home use - media streaming, PC backup, photo library, nothing too difficult. I am debating the whole RAID question, but figure I will get at least a 2 bay chassis to allow for RAID if I choose that path. Or just more future expansion space...
Here's what I need your insight for.. Understanding that RAID doesn't equal backup, I want to purchase a NAS with USB support, and remote a USB HDD in a media firesafe that I have several feet away. I would consider buying 2x NAS devices, but I don't think running one of those inside an enclosed firesafe would be a good idea, whereas just a USB HDD shouldn't be as much an issue. I'm also considering a Pogoplug or similar LAN-to-USB "adaptor", instead of running the USB HDD off the NAS.
Does anyone have any experience doing something similar? Is this a crappy idea for some reason, or sound OK? Anyone recommend one NAS in particular with standout features that support USB HDD backup, or are all about the same here?
So far I decided against the DLink 323 (not enough USB ports) and I am leaning toward the Synology DS211J. Need at least 2 USB ports (one for HDD, one for UPS controled shutdown - unreliable power grid).
Thanks!
