Remove pi hole

Senior Member
I want to remove my pi hole from my Asus router. I set it up so long ago I can't remember what settings I need to change to get it back to default. Can some tell me which settings I need to change and to what. I have tried reverse of setup, but problem is I can't see default settings.
Many thanks

Start with clearing out the DNS Server fields on the LAN / DHCP Server tab (default is empty). Then check if any exceptions were entered for DNS Director.

Thank you. I've switched off DNS director. On the lan DHCP tab if I leave the two DNS fields empty then I have no internet. If I enter cloudfare for example then I do have internet.

What do you have in the WAN DNS fields? Also in LAN/DHCP check Advertise Router IP......

Did you install the Pi-Hole directly to the router or are you running pi-hole on a separate device?
If on a separate device, in the router GUI, just remove the pi-hole entries from the LAN DHCP Server DNS fields 1 & 2 if they are assigned there. Check and remove the entries from the WAN DNS if the Pi-Hole entries are added there. And remove them from the DNS Director if you have configured that page for use with Pi-Hole. Reboot the router and clients when finished.

Basicly just reverse the setup in the router GUI that is explained here: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/pihole-dns.74646/page-3#post-712319

Once removed, you can reconfigure the WAN DNS and or LAN DHCP DNS servers to use what ever DNS servers you wish.

If you installed Pi-Hole directly to the router, see Jacklul's Pi-Hole discussion thread in the Add-Ons subforum to see how it can be removed.

Thank you. All sorted. Just needed a reboot of the router and atta he'd devices. I had one stubborn PC but a flush DNS dis the trick. Many thanks 👍

I spoke too soon.
I turned of DNS director, emptied the two DNS fields in the LAN DCHP tab, set the DNS to get from ISP.

The only device on my network that has internet access is my laptop.
For android phones I rebooted them multiple times and rebooted the router mutiple times but they dont have internet access. Strange.

Pictures are worth thousands of words. Screenshots of your WAN page, DNS Director Page, LAN DHCP Server page, please. What IP does your laptop get from DHCP?

I changed the wan dns to cloudfare and i got a phone to work, but other devices still not working. I have rebooted them all. Here's a few pics:

I repeated the cloudfare DNS on the LAN DCHP page and now all devices are connected.

NAT is enabled on WAN tab.

Not sure why I have had to define the DNS servers on both WAN page and DCHP page.

You don't have to.
Ideally you only set them on the WAN page and enable "Advertise router's IP in addition to user-specified DNS" on LAN->DHCP page while keeping DNS Server 1/2 empty.

When you specify DNS servers on the LAN->DHCP page then you're telling the devices that they should use those DNS servers directly (bypassing router forwarder).

Both setups are still valid, the only thing you can't do when specifying DNS servers on the DHCP page is DNSSEC and few other options (WAN page).

Isn't it needed to be configured on the DHCP page in order for your LAN clients to have a DNS server configured?
Generally, no. The clients would use the router IP address for DNS if the LAN > DHCP Server DNS fields are left blank and the option "advertise router's IP address in addition to user specified DNS" was enabled.

In a situation like this where there is DNS weirdness with a WiFi client. One should check the WiFi client's WiFi settings page to see what it is listing for IP address and DNS servers. Its possible the client is not "forgetting" the old DNS servers even after being rebooted or WiFi connection cycled. Sometimes one may need to instruct the WiFi client to forget the WiFi connection and establish a new one, then check the WiFi client's WiFi settings page to see if it has picked up the new DNS servers.

Do you have any custom scripts installed? Any user scripts like /jffs/scripts/dnsmasq.postconf? Some key piece of information is missing.

and the option "advertise router's IP address in addition to user specified DNS" was enabled.
This is unnecessary as that option is only considered by the firmware if and only if there is a DNS 1 or DNS 2 server configured. Otherwise it is ignored. That’s why the text says “in addition to user specified DNS”.

dnsmasq by default will advertise the IP of the device it is running on as the DNS server.

Ok. So I have set DNS from ISP on wan page. I have clear the DNS settings on LAN dchp and in checked Advertise routers IP. DNS director is disabled.

I can not internet on any devices on my lan. I have rebooted the router and attached devices.

I have also tried changing wan DNS to cloudfare and still no internet.

If however I set wan DNS to isp and Lan dchp to cloudfare and check advertise routers IP it then works.

As per Dave's earlier suggestion, check whether you still have lingering dnsmasq modifications left on your router. Specifically check to see if you have a /jffs/scripts/dnsmasq.postconf file as detailed in this wiki entry: https://github.com/jacklul/entware-pi-hole/wiki/Installing-on-Asuswrt‐Merlin
