Repeater mode - Does Merlin work right compared to stock (380.158)??

It worked correctly in 374.158.

OK, so I called ASUS and asked a few questions:

The only answer I got was, you can downgrade or send it in for repair.

I just did my first upgrade from 374.158 to 380.7743 which was my VERY FIRST firmware upgrade. I really do want to change to Merlin.

There were 4 issues which ASUS doesn't want to hear about. I see why you want to fix bugs.

1. I used 10.0.1.55 for IP address of the router and after the FW update the IP changed to 192.168.1.1 and I had to re-configure by cable connection.

2, In the old FW, the original SSID was retained. In the new FW the suffix _RPT was added. I suppose when I upgrade the FW on the other router, I'll have to use _RPT1 or some such. So, repeat mode seems to acting like an access point and not a repeater. I think it should repeat the highest signal of the base SSID or a specific MAC address.

UPDATE: I was able to change it to WAN on another page, but I swear I was not allowed initially during setup. The infinate loop bug (Constant refreshing) still exists.

Other products (2 of them) like D-link, you have to enter the MAC address of what your repeating. Maybe ASUS is trying to shortcut that.

3. This “Operation Mode:Repeater mode Firmware Version:3.0.0.4.380_7743 SSID:WLAN_RPT WLAN_RPT5G “ shows up on every page, but when I click on WLAN_RPT on the router page, the page just continues to refresh. WLAN_RPT5G worked fine. Firefox 52.0.2; Ubuntu Linux

4. When you say to get IP address automatically, Get DNS automatically is not an option. That's probably OK, but I think it should populate it with the router address as default.

5. The router can't speak English It says “The new password is the same as system default password. We strongly recommend that you set a more complex password.” . When it means “The new password is the same as system default password which is not permitted.”

So, this time my telephone support experience with ASUS really sucked. The only options were “downgrade or repair”. That's just the way it is – take it or leave it. No one has reported the infinite loop issue. This firmware is days old. Repeater mode is totally broken in my opinion. No effort at all on their part. I respectfully hung up on her.
