New Around Here
My old Asante FriendlyNet wired FR3004LC router is on it's last legs - I'm down to one working LAN port. It's been an excellent router. So, I need a new router for my house.

I've reviewed the "cheap router roundup", which I found very interesting, by the way, and went out on the 'net to find the Airlink101 AR504 w/o finding any one selling them besides the Airlink101.com company store. Anybody know where I can get a new one?

I also looked at IPCOP, etc., but computers take 10-30 times as much electricity which translates into heat and noise (hard drives). (I can get a Dell GX150 from Craigslist for $35 w/monitor.) Additional cost is the opportunity cost for me to become an admin in my own home (i.e., it will take time away from my guitar playing).

I then looked thru this forum. I first looked in the router (wired) forum section. D-link's game router (DGL-4100) jump out me as it looks like it will be internet ready for when HD video comes of age. (BTW, Newegg has it for $73 after rebate as of this date.) Then, I thought the advise to use a wireless router with the radio's turned off was a good idea. So, I started to pay attention to the D-Link 655. However, there are heat issues with both of the D-Links which could be problem.

So, anybody got some advise?

Background: The Asante is connected to my DSL modem and an a five port switch (10/100). I have a Linksys WRT54G v6 and an Apple Airport Extreme Base Station connected to the five port switch. I use them both as WAPs since the Asante wasn't broken and has kept the wolves at bay. The WRT54G is "11g" only on 2.4GHz while the AEBS is "11n" only on 5.8GHz. Tivo, PC, Mac PowerBook and several Mac desktops are on the Linksys. My new MacBook Pro is on the AEBS. I have a D-Link DNS-323 NAS and an old SGI Indy are networked into the five port switch.

I suppose I could use my AEBS as my main router since it has 3 10/100/1000 LAN ports for the Linksys, NAS and Indy. But I'm not confident in it to use it as my router/firewall - firewall doesn't seem robust enough - unless yous guys think differently.

A Big TIA for your advise.

thiggins, Thanks for replying. I had read the "How to the Right Router for You" and the companion article on wireless routers. When the Asante router dies, I'll replace it with the AEBS.

BTW, since the Asante uses a browser admin interface, I've printed all the router's pages so that I can easily switch when the time comes.

Keep up the good work. I've recommend your site to many folks.
