RMerlin Firmware [Forks]

Roadspill

Occasional Visitor
I love what @RMerlin has done for the Asus Router community and have been reading through the forums to get a grasp on advanced features and capabilities and I have seen a couple of things talking about Forks of the original Merlin/Asus Firmware.

Can anyone elaborate what the options are available and what each offers over the base Merlin Builds?

Thanks

I just replaced my AC66U with an AC68P (Pricematched for less than U or R version). So this will be my new router. I will also be converting my AC66U into an AP for the opposite end of the house.

Unless you require the extra features, I would just stick with stock. Usually, the extra settings will simply give an amateur more rope to hang themselves with.

Though, I chose Merlin's firmware simply because it was not stock (which is too normal and I am special, lol). Probably more of an emotional choice rather than logical. :/

Well in the aspect of Stock vs Merlin, I will usually choose Merlins work first. He seems to have his head screwed on right, his firmware is based on Asus's work, and for the most part he stays on top of newer builds by Asus.

I haven't been let down yet with his work.

I just was interested to see the opinions of people on the Hgghomes Fork as it is based on Merlins work + tweaks from my understanding.

I enjoy RMerlin Firmware ever since I found out about it, and like I said I'd only ever use it on Asus products as long as he continues to support the project.

I'm trying the Hggomes 378.55 as a trial to see how well it does in comparison to RMerlin 378.55

I do understand that the Hggomes builds upon Merlins build, so a majority of it's stability is included with some updates and tweaks to boost the performance (manually). This ultimately may throw in bugs, but at least the core is pretty darn stable.

I use Merlin's magic because it supports MER as used by the UK ISP Sky, whereas stock does not, so I don't have to use the (crap) Sky provided hub.
I've not yet experimented with the other forks, but Merlin's work is rock solid.
