Smart Connect did not work for me on the latest beta firmware. Terrible pings and disconnect problems.

Guys, I'm running Nord OpenVPN and I seem to get sporadic disconnects and slowdowns... then about 2 minutes later it just begins working smoothly again. I had the same problem with PIA L2TP. Is this normal for VPN connections? Or is it the router? No other devices on the network are affecting the bandwidth, just FYI.

There's a whole tread on what I'm asking about, in the merlin section, prior to the fix on Xbox one for a port change when you had two Xbox consoles using the same port you would get one console with open nat the other moderate, merlin fixed this in his firmware with some firewall rules, ASUS had a similar fix in a beta firmware on the 88u which then never incorporated to the official firmware.
I'm asking because if you have two copies of Call of duty on pc they both use the same port number which causes a port conflict, upnp should redirect it to another port but in stock firmware it has an issue translating the port correctly to fix the conflict and you still get moderate nat, I'm just wondering if that's been fixed in the GT firmware yet, I guess not.
I checked mine. The One X must default to a different port than the S. I havnt adjusted the ports but they are on two diferent ports and they run flawless.

Thats what it is. The One X defaults to auto port. Both show open Nat

Im on the latest firmware but i also did a a fresh install. I love the load balancing on the 5ghz channels

Ah k I have mine set to a default port, sadly when running two copies of call of duty you get nat issues.

Recently I am having issues flashing the router, it goes through fine but at the end it tells me to manually reboot the router. I have tried pulling power and resetting, I have rebooting from webpage. After it comes back up, it is still on the same firmware. Any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong all of a sudden?

I've done a couple of tests on mine. Nothing stellar: 20-23mbps upload and download. Definitely can do much much better than than considering only one core "spiked" to about 17%. In like 90% of time no core goes above 4%.
So it's not for running Netflix 4k over VPN ;)
Yea the performance is at best mediocre. With this hardware we should be seeing stellar vpn speeds. I still believe this is a firmware issue with the VPN server configuration.

I have tried about 4 firmwares now and some break open VPN. Some break pptp etc. I have to roll back or change the firmware to get it to work again. There is something very wrong with the firmwares supplied for this router

Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

I understand that but what I'm getting at is the official had incredibly poor openvpn performance to the point of was barely usable. Where as one of the betas had much better openvpn but broke pptp to not allow traffic out. It's absurd they can't figure this out.

Agreed

I guess i dont understand why you are holding on and have not changed the ports.
You can't on pc it's hard coded to the game, I can change the port on my xbox-one but pc games are locked, upnp ability to deal with the port conflict is something that I'm quirous about with this unit, the xbox-one might allow for a port change but what about two copies of black ops 3 for example, it's a given if the consoles get open nat how about the games, it's the only thing that is holding me back from buying one of these units, since I'm becoming inclined to buy one since I saw one on sale for a lot less than retail price.

Simply put if I'm to run two copies of a game that requires the same port number how does the unit handle the conflict, do both copies of for example black ops 3 get open nat or does one get open while the other gets moderate that's what I'm asking.

So the issue is only happening with aimesh enabled? I would like to test this one because i have some other issues and would like to see if it was fixed

Thanks

Not sure...would love to hear some results from this forum. I may try later towards the end of the work day since I WFH and can't afford to be down too long right now.

For anyone having issues with link aggregation:

I have been in contact with Asus support. After running several telnet commands, they pretty much confirmed that something was wrong with the router. Essentially, there were settings missing in the nvram that are used for the link aggregation. I had also purchased a second unit and it too had the same issue (without any firmware updates being applied). They do not know how the settings were missing, but have assured me that they are adding a fix to the next beta firmware release. It seems like some units were affected since some people in this thread have link aggregation working. For any of those who do not have link aggregation working, this is likely the same issue.

I`m trying to register to download the Fw but i`m not receiving the confirmation mail

if i get i`ll post here the link, i`m excited to try this one as well

I've installed this update on my GT-AC5300, they have removed the AiMesh settings completely from this version of firmware. So far, it seems stable, but I've not been able to fully test it out as I work from home and can't test during working hours. Took only a few minutes to update the firmware though.
