Router as VPN server & client

tossom

Occasional Visitor
Hello folks,

I am running Merlins firmware (374.35_4) on my N66U and set up the openvpn server, which was working flawless so far. Problems occur now, when I want to set up the router as client of a commercial VPN service.
When I enter the necessary details in the clients tab (tried the router as openvpn client and as well with l2tp), the router is successfuly connecting to the VPN service. When I try to connect to the running Openvpn server on the router itself, the connection will time out and no clients will connect. If I disconnect the router as VPN client, then all other devices can again connect via VPN to the router.
My question would be, if this is normal behaviour? Is it really impossbile to have the router running as VPN client & VPN server at the same time?

Thanks for your help and comments.

One of the issues could be that when you connect to your commercial VPN provider your public IP is changing.

It might be possible to get a dynamic DNS service to recognize and report this new IP. It would probably be more likely that you can connect if your VPN provider will give you a static IP. I use StrongVPN and they assign static IPs however other VPN providers claim it is more secure not to assign static IPs.

Good luck.

Bingo, that was the problem. I updated my public IP manually before, but it seems to take a little while, until NO-IP registers it. Had just to wait a bit longer. Thank you

Doesn't work anymore. Get this error now in openvpn when I try to connect:
Transport Error: PolarSSL: SSL read error : X509 - Certificate verification failed, e.g. CRL, CA or signature check failed

Checked the no-ip host and it is still in agreement with my public ip. When I stop the client mode on the router, I can immediately connect to it's openvpn server after changing the ddns back to the IP address attributed by my ISP
