Router file transfer issue

New Around Here
I'm trying to back up some family videos to external hard drive and it freaks out. My recent try were 78 files at different file sizes, with "date_time" as for the file names for example "20140522_083029.mp4". After it freaks out and manually reset it, I checked the folder and it only transferred 10 files at the total file size of 1.18gb. Also when it freaks out I'm still able to surf the web but can not access the router which leads me to reset my router. I own a RT-N66R and I'm using a usb 3.0 WD hard drive on the usb 3.0 port it offers. If you guys need any more info let me know where in the router I can get it for you guys.

Oh this issues exists in both stock firmware and Merlin's firmware.

The RT-N66 U/R doesn't offer USB 3.0 ports.

Does the drive you're using have external power, or are you trying to use the built in USB port supplied power?

yeah I have the small external hard drive and it only came with a usb cord. These size of hard drive don't need an external power source the usb power source is good enough.

The capability of the device to support an external not powered usb disk is very variable and is dependent on its power (electricity) and more specifically on the power it can provides to the usb port. Sometimes the usb power source is not good enough.

Anyways you need to access the log to know more.
You don't mention the tool used to make the copy ?
You don't mention what was the error message when you were unable to access the router after "it freaks out" ?

While this may be true when connected to a computer, their expected use, it doesn't mean that the router is capable of providing that power over the built in USB ports.

Either try with a USB 'Y' cable with the power side plugged into a laptop or try with a USB hub, if you don't have access to a proper power adaptor for your external drive.

My first-hand experience with these self-powered disks tend to be pretty poor, especially with the Seagate ones. I had a customer who couldn't get them to work reliably even plugged to a server through a Y-shaped cable - plugging both of them using a real AC adapter resolved their issue. Another customer kept having the disk randomly drop/reconnect during copies on a desktop.

The Vantec enclosure I have at home with a 750 GB Toshiba HDD in it seems to work pretty well however, quite often I don't even plug the second branch of the Y cable when using it on my laptop.

Ok let me explain it again whats happening from my recent try I was copying 78 family videos to my WD My Passport Ultra 1tb Hard Drive. In the middle of transferring it disconnect and no way for me to get back on the hard drive via Samba under Window 7's Explorer. So I wanted to see what was going on I tried to get on the Router's OS but It wasn't letting me in for some weird reason my browser was trying to load the page but it kept saying loading and no I never got an error. So I don't know if the amount of power can affect me not getting on the router's OS. But the weird thing is I was able to surf the web. But to gain access to the router I had to manually restart it. Does restarting the router affect the log to restart?

I'm gonna reproduce this with a 32gb flash drive to see if I get the same results

No the power source is adapted to the router needs. Yes restarting the router will restart the log. The best thing would be to access the router using Putty if you want a more direct connection. At least you can try to close the browser and open it again with the router address if this happens again, but read again RMerlin 's note...

Good idea. Again:
