Router stops resolving hostnames with local DNS servers

I have an Asus RT-AX82U running stock firmware. I have enabled the DHCP server and manually assigned static IP addresses to my devices.

The issue arises when I set local DNS servers under the LAN tab. In this configuration, my router stops resolving hostnames for devices on my network. However, when I set public DNS servers under the WAN tab, I can successfully reach my devices using hostnames.

Does anyone know why this happens or how to resolve the issue?

Those public DNS servers don’t know how to resolve your local client names. LAN clients are making DNS requests directly to those public servers, bypassing the router’s DNS server.

Isn't this option specifically designed for such a scenario?
No, that option tells the router to forward local domain queries to the upstream DNS servers (in this case, your ISP). Your ISP won’t know how to resolve your local client names either.

In short, you can’t use LAN DNS servers and expect local name resolution to work. The best option is to put those servers in the WAN settings.

Thank you for the clarification.
