I have the RP-AC68U. Is this supported by Merlin and would it provide AiMesh compatibility.

No RMerlin support.

No RMerlin support.
Thank you. shame as its just sitting in its box. If I use it as an AP connected via ethernet does the roaming assistant work well enough for clients to connect to the most powerful wifi signal?

ASUS would have to release a firmware for so mesh support for the repeater.

I wrote to ASUS and got the reply below. It doesn't say no, but sounds like it most likely won't get AiMesh.

"Please be advised that at the moment we do not have any information when and if the RP-AC68U will recieve a firmware update that will allow the support for AiMesh system. Kindly be advised that as soon there is a new firmware update available, our team in HQ Taiwan will make an announcement at the Asus website."

That sounds about right, it seems that they abandoned it, I haven't see updates for the unit in ages and I have two of them.

I got mine recently. Haven't unbox d it yet. Been decorating. Can I ask in your experience if I set mine to AP mode with ethernet backhaul and set the SSIDs the same as the main router, does the roaming assistant settings work sufficiently that client devices attach them selves to the unit with the strongest signal?

RP-AC1900 may use Merlin firmware without official support (read more), but the RP-AC68U will definitely not, because it uses Realtek's SoC. this is why so difficult to add AiMesh support to it. I don't think it will get AiMesh supported.

Got another email from ASUS confirming a no.

"Sir/Madam

Thank you for your email.

No, no plans on adding AIMesh to this, due to SOC limitation

Apologies for any inconvenience caused by this"

Hi I do have an RP-AC68U working fine as an access point first to my previous RT-AC3200 and since one year ago to my RT-AX88U router. Just for the record I found out that it is super stable when running the 382.10513 firmware, which is the previous one to the last available one, since the 382.40019 (last one) is bogus and crashes systematically after a few days working.

In any case it works quite well including the roaming assistant functionality, even if NOT in aimesh mode. As already stated aimesh will not be supported for the RP-AC68U.
