RT-AC3100 hangs when listing smb folder

just bought a RT-AC3100, updated to latest asus firmware. I have a 5tb WD portable drive attached to USB and smb share enabled, guest log in allowed. Share is working, I can read/write root folder from Windows or android client. But when I try to open a folder with about 100 folders inside it never finishes. In fact, browsing any folder takes way longer than it should, but the one folder with lartge # of folders inside never finishes. As I said, it's about 100 folders, not an insanely huge number.

When I try to log into the router admin page the UI is very sluggish, suggesting the operation is causing the router to hang. I tried both USB 3 and 2 port. Disabled dlna, itunes server, printer server. Rebooted of course. I verified that the drive is fine by connecting directly to PC and running chkdsk and browsing the problematic folder.

Any suggestion? thanks

Using the (grossly underpowered) router as a NAS, this should be expected.

What is that drive formatted as? You may need to attach it to a computer and do a disk check on it before it works properly again (if it can).

ntfs. i have chkdsk /f and windows found no error. It seems to come down to a few problematic files and error went away when I deleted them. I don't know what makes those files problematic, however
