RT-AC3100 Slow Download/Fast Upload.....Merlin FW...

Maybe this is a little more appropriate here since it seems I'm specifically having a weird time getting Merlin to be stable for me. Mods if this is out of line please let me know.

I'm on Suddenlink 200/20. For some strange reason I can't get my AC3100 to behave. Plugged into the modem my speeds are fine, but off of the router, whether I'm wired/wireless, I can't get past 1 or 2 down. I can get 20 up all day long using either method. I've tried rebooting, resetting, etc., but the modem and the router to no avail.

I was on Merlin 380.63_2 yesterday, and through some miracle I managed to get the right combination of rebooting and resetting the right equipment in sequence...and I ended up getting 180/20 for a period of time. I went to upgrade to 380.64.....and now I'm back in the crapper. I can't find any combination that works.

I've only been running Merlin firmware so far, never tried the stock ASUS for stability. I'm about to do that now. Any thoughts on what might be going on?

EDIT - Alrighty, just loaded stock ASUS FW - 380_3941, which is the latest, and everything is good to go. I'm back in business. Any thoughts why that might be?

The above happened on Tuesday. Since then I've been rock solid stable on the official licensed firmware. What gives?

My guess is, it depends on something happening during the boot process, regardless of the firmware version. Recent versions of Asuswrt now will test different MACs when booting. It's possible that one of these MACs is the one your ISP "officially" recognizes. Try powering off your modem for at least 10 minutes to fully reset its connection with the ISP.

Also make sure you don't have any MAC configured on the Clone field, under WAN.

Thanks for the reply. Each time I tested a different configuration of booting up which one first, I always left the modem off and unplugged from the wall and coax for at least 10 minutes. Regardless of the Merlin version I tried, no dice. I'd completely power down the modem, and completely reset the router. No go. It wasn't until I loaded the latest version of the official firmware that it all popped into place.

That last part, I hadn't checked that. Would there be something like that automatically placed that in effect in one of the Merlin FWs?

Asus recently changed the WAN handling code, and I haven't studied their changes - but I do have the same code as they were using in GPL 3831.

I've seen cases where the MAC clone field would automatically get populated. I don't know why or what causes it.

Gotcha. I can check that out. I'm hesitant to do so now that I'm running so stable. Just to pick at my curiosity. Let's say it wasn't that....what then?

You could check to see if there's an entry in the MAC clone field without affecting stability, especially if you log out of the webui without altering anything.

We're all waiting with baited breath to know the answer!

Then no idea. Some ISPs do really weird things on their network, only they would know why they do some of that stuff.

Am I thinking about this wrong? I figured I'd have to upload the Merlin FW back and then see if something populated. No?
