RT-AC3100 Speed question

I tried to search and could not find the answer to my question,

The best speed I get with my AC3100 is 20 to 30 depending who's speed check I use and the VPN (PIA) turned on. We have a 10/100 connection and get that with the VPN off. Running the latest 380.68 Merlin and the settings Yorgi has posted.

Is that normal? I would love to get at least half our rated speed if possible.

If you are getting those speeds through your vpn you are rocking right along. The processor in the router is not capable of anything higher through vpn.

Thanks for the reply!! I thought I saw someone in these forums say they were getting 50 to 60 with the same router and if so, I wondered what I was doing wrong, if it's normal and working properly, I'm good!

my ac 88u can hit 50 mbit through VPN and CPU usage is around CPU 1 60-70% CPU2 10-20% so I think AC 88U can handle 100 mbit. (NAT acceralation off) but it depends on your VPN settings.

hmmmm......the ac3100 is the same router, and I'm half your speed at best. PIA VPN.

Didn't seem to make much difference, no better, no worse.

The biggest hitter is Auth Digest.....if you can use SHA1 instead of SHA256 you'll get a substantial boost (may require a different connection port and certs for a commercial provider).

SHA1 is on, that's the speed I seem to be stuck at.

I set up the VPN on my 3100 based on the instructions that I found on PIA's website. I know there have been some required changes with the update to openvpn 2.4 in the more recent firmware versions. When I did the testing back in January 2017 my router was running Asuswrt-Merlin 380.64 firmware. I was connecting to PIA VPN servers on port 1198.

AC3100 (1.4 Ghz dual core)
CTF (Cut Through Forwarding NAT Acceleration)
DL: 61 Mbps with core 1 at 25%, core 2 at 75%
DL :74 Mbps with core 1 at 30%, core 2 at 85% with mods*
UL: 84 Mbps with core 1 at 35%, core 2 at 100%

The speed tests were conducted over a wired connection from the computer to the router.

Data encryption: AES-128-CBC
Data authentication: SHA1
Handshake: RSA-2048

*Adding the following lines to the custom configuration bumped the DL speeds to 74 Mbps.
sndbuf 524288
rcvbuf 524288
push "sndbuf 524288"
push "rcvbuf 524288"

I know where the NAT Acceleration setting is, and it is on.

Never heard of the CTF one, I will have to find that.

I do not see the 'handshake' you mention.

Data authentication: SHA1 , I have both set the same.


I will try the custom config settings you shared tonight, I haven't had anywhere near enough coffee to try it at 4am.....LOL

Sounds right on to me! That is based on your model router and the speed your ISP sells you.

Thanks! That's what I was most curious about, if that's all that can be expected, no problem. But, I'm always willing to learn and try some things!!
