Just in case somebody is interested. I've now installed merlin's 384.16 firmware and switched my main router to AP mode. Because I was bored I decided to give AI mesh another go, changed the second router from repeater to ai mesh node, and everything seems to be working as expected now. Don't know if it's the mode switch or the fact that i'm using merlin's latest firmware but so far so good. So, AP with an AI Mesh node seems ok, i hope it stays that way.

[edit, and i just found this out about the sonos, so wireless N Only mode will not work properly:

Wireless-N and Wireless-AC routers should work with Sonos as long as they are still broadcasting over B and G WiFi. Most Wireless-N and AC routers should do this unless manually configured not to.

When you move around the house and your GSM roams to another node, are you still able to reach your sonos?

Wonder if your original issue is similar to what we are facing here : https://www.snbforums.com/threads/unable-to-reach-local-clients-after-roaming.62020/#post-560953

no issues with the sonos and roaming, just checked and verified that my GSM switched nodes through the main router's UI.

however with a wired device on the node I experienced the same thing you did. initially unreachable from my gsm (pingable from a wired computer on the main router) but after a bit i can connect to it again. personally I can live with that since it's only a hue hub which isn't used much but it shouldn't happen. i'm not switching back to repeater mode but I don't recall having this problem with the repeater although it never occurred to me to test for it.

i ordered the 2x zenwifi AX kit a couple of days ago to replace my rt-ac5300's, hopefully that'll work better with AI mesh since it's specifically designed for it. it seems to have a more advanced firmware, 386 vs 384, so hopefully the 386 firmware will trickle down to the other devices.

i can't believe i didn't catch the fact that the sonos won't work properly on an N only network although in this day and age who would think to look for that.
