RT-AC66U with NETGEAR WNR3500l as accesspoint.

Hi,
A bit confused here i must say.

I'm trying for the first time in my life, to set up an access point on the top floor in the house.
I recently replaced my old WNR3500L with an RT-AC66U and it didn't take long before i found Merlins firmware (:)), so now i'm running the latest version of it since a couple of weeks back and everything seems to run smooth i thing except for my feeling that the wi-fi is a bit slower and not as stable as my old was.

Anyway, yesterday when i tried to connect the AP to RT-AC66U, i first change the settings in the AP to act as AP and then i tried to connect it to the RT-AC66U, but when clicking apply, i just got the note "Processing" and then nothing more...i waited for 30 minutes and after that i refreshed the page and found that none of my settings where there except the mac of the AP.

Why are my settings ignored by RT-AC66U?
[EDIT:] Because you have to change the setting whilst connected by cable to the router. Beginners mistake!!!

Is there any other way to speed up the wireless and make the signal stronger?

In my Windows 8 laptop i can actually see the wireless switch between connected and limited from time to time. I have never seen this in the iPad or in any of my Windows 7 computers.
Is it the W8 or the router?

And while messing around with this i also found something confusing...although the AP is set to be an AP, the settings for acting as a DHCP server is still active.
Should they be, i didn't try but i guess i can deactivate them?

I mean, what's the point in having 2 DHCP servers?

A big thank you to anyone who takes the time reading this and maybe give me some hints.

Your questions seem to be about configuring your Netgear as an access point. Surely you should be asking about it on a Netgear forum?

You mention that you are changing settings on the AC66U. Why? You connect an access point to the AC66U with a LAN cable, or are you trying to set it up in repeater or bridge mode?

More information is required.
