Hi.

There is made one specified firmware for the RT-AC68U fo being able to setup a guest Wi-Fi that will give you access to the guest network, if the user check-in to a Facebook page. (3.0.0.4.380.2717 firmware).

The only problem with this firmware is that it is missing one very important setting. It is allowing full access to the network except thru port 80, that is when you are redirected to the Facebook check-in site.

We want to be able to block everything until the check-in has been done. I know this can work, because I borrowed a Cisco Meraki MR18 from work for testing and there you have the option:
  • Allow non-HTTP traffic prior to sign-on: All traffic types except for TCP port 80 are allowed before the splash page is acknowledged.
  • Block all access until sign-on is complete All traffic types are blocked until the splash page is acknowledged.
We need the option: Block all access until sign-on is complete. We have tried asking Asus they say it’s the only firmware with Facebook guest Wi-Fi, and there is no plan to make another firmware that support it. Everywhere is search I find people with the same problem.

The question from all of us is if there is possible that the firmware 3.0.0.4.380.2717 on the RT-AC68U can be modified so that it can have the block everything setting?

ASUS just released a new firmware version for the 68U today. From the support page:

ASUS RT-AC68U Firmware version 3.0.0.4.380.4164
[Important]
If your firmware version is 3.0.0.4.380.2717 and used Facebook Wi-Fi, please DO NOT update to this version.
We will release another special version for Facebook Wi-Fi users soon.

Same issue for me. I wrote to Support Asus to explain the problem and ask if there will be a firmware upgrade.

I totally do not see the value of this Facebook-WiFi feature.
It is for sure some Facebook sponsored thing with, as shown, security issues and who knows what other hidden extras like trackers.
Let us use routers solely what they are meant for according the good old 3-in-one rule: router + network switch + wireless access point. Only by this we can keep a close eye on our own (home) network security.
Other features belong in other boxes or machines.
Hopefuly Asus keeps this Facebook-WiFi feature for special firmware only.

I do not agree. "Facebook WiFi" simply lets customers check in to participating businesses on Facebook for free Wi-Fi access. When people check in to your Page, you can share offers and other announcements with them. So it let you share you "Guest" WiFi (separated from your personal WiFi) to customers and collect info about them to do social marketing.

Well exactly why I hope it will stay a totally separate firmware.
Tommorow Google want their own router firmware, the day after Microsoft, next day some other data tracker.
The little benefit for you, means another other free of charge huge benefit for in this case Facebook.
